The investments don't do particular ly well mainly because Canada and its dollar stay “strong and free.” You don't make any foreign investments. Your investments suffer because Canada takes a financial dive The average Canadian who watched WS earlier this month or last February saw parallels drawn between Canada and New Zealand, which had too much debt for its own good. Could Canadians face really sharp cutbacks in government benefits and a corresponding rise in each individual's cost of living, as New Zealand, which did in the 1980s? Could we see a sharp drop in our dollar? (The New Zealand dollar, once worth about $1.40 U.S., now hovers just over 50 cents U.S.) Many experts feel the answer to both questions is yes although you'll find other experts who say Canada can cope with its deficits and debts. The optimists fee] the country is strong enough to weather the crisis, and with a strong enough political will can return to its former financial soundness. The wise investor hedges bets by diversifying, although Mike Grenby Syndicated Columnist investing outside Canada also carries risks. If Canada does well and the Canadian dollar strengthens against the foreign currency, you could lose money. It's more difficult to monitor offshore investments. And you have to deal with different tax rules, sometimes even paying tax in a foreign country for which you cannot claim an off- setting deduction in Canada. Still, if you worry about Canada’s fyture, you should consider some of the following options for some of your money. Most financial institutions offer U.S. dollar accounts and deposits; most banks also offer some accounts and deposits in other foreign currencies. The booklet lists models by size category and, in easy-to- read chart form, shows whether driver air bags, passenger air bags and anti-lock braking sys- tems (ABS) are offered as stan- dard or optional equipment, or are available at all. It also rates head rest effectiveness, theft resistance and collision repair costs “Someone buying a new car can refer to many publications research Filmed in Trail which review and rate vehicles on the basis of price, handling, fuel economy and so on, explains Gane. “We're providing additional information about safety features which uses our knowledge of the B.C. experi- ence Updated editions of the book- let will be produced for new models.
