C4 CASTLEGAR NEWS, June 10, 1981 Trades prison savings for visit with mother STONY MOUNTAIN, MAN. (CP) — An inmate of Stony Mountain Penitentiary traded 11/2 years of prison savings for a 48-hour visit with his mother, and he says it was worth every cent, Raynald Griffith-Cochrane, 40, is entering his 12th year of a life sentence for non- capital murder. He is the first inmate to use the new family visit trailer at the institution, about 10 kilometres north of Winnipeg. “This has done so much for Every once in awhile | get a craving to see a mature woman delivering the six o’clock news, iknow {'m talking cra: , but sometimes @ think if | see another silken-halred nymph with capped teeth and wet lips wrapped around the failing economy, Ill scream. . At times when | like to have died from sitting there figuring out how many ways there are to tle a scarf, I'd turn on Walter Cronkite and try to imagine him with hair parted in the middle and rolled into a bun at the nape of his neck. : ‘One of the things people liked about Walter was that he not only delivered the news with wisdom and ex- perience... he gave you the impression he was goig to do something about It. An older woman could do that. Experience could be an asset to a mature woman newscaster, Take the other night. | saw a young on- chorperson.. .. no more than 12 years old... shoved microphone into the face of a 23-year-old woman who had just given birth to five children, had four others at home, a husband ovt of work and she asked, “How do you feel?” A woman over 30 would hove known the answer before she asked the question, The print media, somehow,.do not indulge them- selves in that kind of discrimination. We have scores of mature woman writers who wear glasses, suffer from alaness, sweat, frown, have poor postue, small eyes, Buy boring coats,,and don‘t care: diddly about the weather. 1 used to know a lot of women who were involved i boradcasting 10 or 12 years ago. One of them had hips. When the School for the Terminally Serious began to turn out women graduates, they were reassigned to small booths in radio stations ond eventually phased’ out. Most of them are underground now, leading beige lives and watching their old tapes. | Granted television personalities should look attrac- tive, but a word to the eye-liner and lip gloss set — in- side everybody is a mature woman fighting to get out. I'll never forget the fate Totie Fields who appeared one day on the Mike Douglas show. When a sex sym bol joined them the audience nearly went crazy. Totie walked out into the audience and shouted, “What are you applauding HER for? Every one'of you in the audience looks just likeme.” _ . strengthening, heck, I should say renewing our relation- ship,” Griffith-Cochrane said. “It's simple ‘sharing that matters... things like doing dishes together and talking.” Part of his savings of $800 went to gas expenses for mother Zelle Cochrane's 1,800-kilometre drive from Salmon Arm, to the peni- tentiary. The rest went to- ward hotel bills, food for the trailer anda little extra so his pensioner mother “won't eat noodles until the next cheque _ comes.” For Griffith-Cochrane, the luxuries of the visit were small but fully appreciated, After years of “slimy show- ers" he took a three-hour bath. After thousands of flourescent-illuminated nights he hung a blanket over the bedroom window to cap- ture every drop of darkness. And, after sleeping in a five-square-metre cell for more than a decade, he re- lished the sense of space in the trailer's master bedroom, He also cherished endless conversation with his mother on hundreds of topics. CHANGES T00 BIG He said major changes in his life — such as newly embraced Christianity — were too big to deal with in letters or four-hour tempor- ary absence visits, , Griffith-Cochrane said it is quite a letdown returning to his cell, which he describes as “the same size as three clos- ets in this trailer.” -“It's a terrible shock," he said. “One of the worst problems is coming back filled with a million words you want to spill-but have no one to talk te, Other inmates don’t want to talk because it hirts to think of their own families. However, the visits are something to look forward to and are an incentive to good behavior, he said. Only 12 of the 450 inmates in the penitentiary are eli- gible to use the trailer. mae Recalling my Moosonee .~ THERE ARE three ways of getting to Moosonce. You can fly, which is expensive, You.can walk, which is lengthy, or you can take the train, which is ‘something else, I took the train because I was a bit broke after a major decorating job, becatise my gout was acting up and I couldn’t have made it walking in two years, and” because 1 wanted the ' experience. It was an experience I will never forget. Or repeat. When = think: that my daughter made the game trip two years ago, with two small boys, my heart bleeds for her. It's almost twenty- four hours from Toronto, and she refused to get sleeping berths, against my . advice, ‘ But she’s a very adaptable, strong-hearted and generally clear-headed young woman, and has made-not only a go of it, but a success of coping with. a frontier town, if there's such a thing left in Canada. . At Cochrane, you change from a fast transCanada train to the self-styled Polar Bear Express, somewhat of a ‘misnomer, as it has nothing . todo, even peripherally, with polar bears, and is the exact opposite of an express, It « stops whenever it feels like it, backs up for a white, sits for awhile, then jogs off again. Sitting in surrounded by fat, middle. aged chuckled and gossiped in Cree, I felt much like a Russian, aristocrat who had banished to Siberia for supposedly plotting against‘ the Czar, The train rolled on hour after hour through the taiga, skinny evergreens too useless even for pulpwood, burnt-out patches every so But often, a coach Indian - ladies who three taxis, want? snow out both restaurant, Well, What more could a man maybe poolroom.. There is no industry, yet. everybody seems to have money. Nobody looks even vaguely hungcy. Perhaps it’s a matter of taking’ in each other's washing. : But I have a suspicion that if all the government money,” railway, © liquor . ‘store, schools, police, welfare, old age pensions, baby bonuses and so ‘on. were suddenly withdrawn, the place would collapse, and be remembered. as a sort of: rough-hewn Camelot. ‘ There is,. of course, the tourist industry, but that’s pretty negligible except for a pretty sizable investment, and has used It with some common sense... The town used to be an army base, and many ofthe buildings have been put to use as schools, housing,, administrative of- fices. Better than’ leaving them to rot. For.example, the houses on the base are now rented:to, teachers and other officials. The barracks are ‘used to: house the Indian kids from, Moose Factory, across the river, in spring and fall, when it's unsafe to cross the ‘river. The recreation building is used for school-rooms, It still has a bowling alley. Thereis a curling rink, where kids also learn to skate. At the school there is a fine cafeteria, with food that would make the habituces of visit cur school cafeteria drool. But this is beginning to sound like a travelogue, not my Intention. 1 had a grand visit with. my only daughter, without the constant inter ruptions of her mother. I played chess with my grandson, 7, and barely escaped with my hide, Twice he forced me to stalemate, in- stead of checkmate, 2 humiliating experience. And cL ‘played without mercy, ‘regardless of are. We had music, and read joctry, played dominoes, and ate like kings. 1 ripped off three graceful Moosonce geese, hand- crafted by the natives.
