When they returned the trio brought with them the Society's Heritage Week Award for Communications —-a first in the committee's brief career, against very strong competition from across the province. During Heritage Week celebrations in late Febru ary, the committee empha. sized the restoration of the chapel house on Zuckerberg Island Heritage Park and the CP Rail station. The cele- bration was a resounding yt ee we yet ,- un ade a bs i success thanks in part to hard work by the committee and in part to the cooperation of the Castlegar News, CKQR Radio, the City of Castlegar personnel, West Kootenay Power, the man- agement and personnel of CP Rail and an_ enthusiastic public. At a meeting Thursday, the committee accepted the award, made plans for the official opening of the chapel house on Sunday and heard a brief report on the confer- ence. The conference was des- cribed as “excellent” — and since the Shuswap Indians undertook a major role in the conference — a major step in Indian-European understand ing. The committee also stud- ied the 52-item questionnaire wins award from: Project Pride, a her- itage survey taking place at 10 selected cities in the prov- ince during May and June. Project Pride was described at the annual heritage con- ference as the most signi- ficant step in heritage con servation since the passage of the Heritage Act in 1973. John Charters was instruc- ted to present a brief at the hearing in Nelson Thursday. Private school knocks public school system MAPLE RIDGE (CP) — A private school headmaster says he won't back down from his portrayal of B.C. public schools as being rife with “overcrowding, drugs, alcohol, dropouts and discip: linary problems.” But Sandy Heard, head master of Meadowridge school in this Fraser Valley community, said the school might have acted “too has- tily” when it placed adver. tisements to that effect in local newspapers. “We didn’t mean to knock our friends,” he said, adding the critical phrases now have been dropped from the school's ads. But Heard reiterated that he gets 10 to 15 calls a day from parents complaining about those problems in public schools and said such problems are common know ledge. Fred Herfst, executive director of the Federation of Independent School Associ- ations of B.C., said the fed- been “that we do not attack the public school system.” Meadowridge, a non-den- ominational school, has ap plied for federation member. ship. The school also plans to apply for 35-per-cent funding from the provincial govern- ment. The Maple Ridge school board has told the Education Ministry” the government should think twice about funding a private school that spends money on advertising critical of the public school of Wednesday, June 10, 1987 stle Supplement to the Castlegar News Ca DAYS WITH NO PAYMENTS 0 3.9% FINANCING ON SELECTED UNITS 0.A.C.
