So often an interesting column is con- tinued on page whatever and by the time you turn to page whatever, your eye has been distracted so many times, you have forgotten what you were reading. Yet the advertising in a newspaper or magazine is often the only accurate in- dicator of the readability of the publication. The adver- tizer wants to distract the eye of the reader. If nobody is reading the publication, the advertizer receives no return on his investment and soon stops advertising. The publications that have the readers keep happy advertizers. As annoying as the pro- liferation of ads in a success- ful journal may be, they are often a better indicator of the dreams, the asporations, and the way of life of a society than the articles and reports that the reader is looking for. ‘The merchandise offered in these ads have a tremen- dous impact on the society they serve, and on occasion can change the whale way of life.
