Not so, said the boyish-faced Wagner: “It’s a very big departure.” He plays a suave, sophisticated businessman in the ABC movie, There Must Be a Pony a deep sadness in his life,” Wagner said in an interview “He was an interesting character to play, because a lot of it was very, very interior.” There Must Be a Pony is based on the book by Pulitzer Prize-winning author James Kirkwood. The story revolves around the risky love affair between Ben Nichols (Wagner), a charming businessman, and a cele brated movie star (Elizabeth Taylor) who is making a after an e and collapse Though they came up through the studio system in the 1950s, Wagner and Taylor never worked together “We had always wanted to do a film together, and | asked her if I could get this property, would she do it with me,” he said. “She knew the book. “We've been friends, you know, for years. I can't think of a leading man who wouldn't want to work with Elizabeth Taylor. You have to stand in line for that Wagner loves the message in the book. The title, he said, comes from a story about a doctor with two sons, one an optimist and one a pessimist. On Christmas day, the doctor puts the pessimistic son in a room full of gifts. He puts the optimistic son in a room half full of manure When he checks of them later, the pessimist is plagued by suspicion of the gifts. But the optimist is laughing and throwing manure in the air, and his father asks him why. The son replies that with all the manure “He's unable to commit to anything. There's a kind of © Wagner movie a departure there must be a pony ‘That's the story,” said Wagner. “It means to look for the good things in life. Look on the positive side.” The movie airs Oct. 5 Wagner is also to appear in a Hart to Hart special and plans a movie based on Samantha Smith, the Maine schoolgirl who had received international publicity when she toured the Soviet Union at the invitation of the late Communist Party Chairman Yuri Andropov. She was to have made her acting debut with Wagner in the TV series Lime Street, but died in a plane crash before the television season started. The 56-year-old actor talks about “Sam” in the same pained and weary way he responds to even an oblique reference to his late wife, Natalie Wood, who accidentally drowned near the couple's anchored yacht off Catalina Island in 1981 After the later cancellation of his hit TV series, Hart to Hart, Wagner was ready to return with Lime Street last year, in which he played a wealthy international in surance investigator. But the series crumbled with Samantha's death. He doesn't yet have a script for the Samantha story SEEKS HONESTY | just have the rights to do it with her mother,” he said “They have wanted to make a film out of it, and I thought it would be better to be involved with it so that she could be told in somewhat an honest way.” Since his first movie in 1950, Halls of Montezuma, Wagner had the image of the charming leading man but was always drubbed by critics for his acting ability A native of Detroit who was spotted by a talent scout while still in college, he’s made 26 movies [or theatrical release and velevision, including A Kiss Before Dying with Joanne Woodward iif'1956 and All the Fine Young Cannibals in 1959. He starred in the TV series It Takes a Thief, Colditz, Switch as well as Hart to Hart OY ROBERT WAGNER loves message Over the years, Wagner has learned to laugh at his acting. He was asked if his portrayal in There Must Be a Pony stretched his talent “Anything is a stretch for me,” he quipped “I got my hands full doing what I'm doing, you know I find that, to make it look as easy as possible, to make it look as real as possible, it takes enough of my time to do that.” WED THU [FRI SAT WED [THU[FRI) Seeenowmo, ON COUNTRY CHARTS 24 25,26 27 7200 NOTHING IN COMMON 24 25''26) 9.00% AFTER A DECADE OF SMENCE ~~ are wracias AMA | PETERSEN IEIST JOAN ALLEN BREAKING YEAR! Prairie pastor wages war on demons By JANICE LAVALLEE WINNIPEG — Rev. Aldwin Ragoonath has vivid memories of a young man who'approached the altar of his Winnipeg church one Sunday, his eyes fluttering madly. “There was something weird about him,” says Ragoonath. “Each time he came up to pray, his eyes flickered.” As the weeks went by, the man's behavior grew worse and one day the Pentecostal pastor knew he couldn't ignore the problem any longer. “He became vicious and started speéking in different voices,” he said, describing the incident that occurred about six years ago. “He became black and blue, he started to foam at the mouth. Four people had to hold him down.” CALLED EXORCIST So, Ragoonath, who has taken our advertisments in a Winnipeg newspaper describing himself as an exorcist, began the procedure that would cast the demons away. “We just prayed with him for about four days and each time more and more demons left. They'd sort of leave and then come back until the movements, the (flickering) eyes, everything, left.” A dictionary definition of an exorcist is “one who drives out evil spirits of adjuration.” Ragoonath, 37, first became interested in battling the devil about 18 years ago in his native Trinidad, where notions of evil spirits are closely tied with culture and superstition The affable pastor says he has performed about one Fogerty won't sing Own songs = By Associated Press Singer John Fogerty says Royal Canadian Legion ) ..°" ee se Branch No. 170 made him famous as part of the rock group Creedence Guests Must Be SIGNED In CABARET Saturday Dancing 9:30 p.m.-1:30a.m OPEN MON. - THUR. 11 A.M. - 1 A.M. FRASER BELANGER perform any of his Creedence hits, including Proud Mary exorcism a year during the 10 years ne has been in Canada and will continue to do so as the need arises. NO MYSTERY Despite the eerie portrayal of demonic possession in films such as The Exorcist, Ragoonath says there is no mystery surrounding him or his work. He sees his clients in a small, cluttered office in the basement of Agape Chapel, a Pentecostal church in south Winnipeg. There is no charge for the service. There are no books about exorcism lining his library shelves and no objects that hint at his work in battling demons. Despite common skepticism surrounding exorcism, Terrence Day, a religion professor at the University of Manitoba, said it is still a respected practice among some Christian religions, including the Roman Catholic Church. APPROVE RITUAL In the Anglican Church, Day said it is no longer a ceremony conducted by a person officially designated as an exorcist. But it's an approved ritual which is done in private at the discretion of the parish priest, said Day, who is also an Anglican priest He said it's usually done on mentally disturbed people who believe, or whose family believes, they are possessed by demons. To avoid confusing possession with, mental illness, Ragoonath said he always sends his cliefts to a psychia trist first. He said if that doesn’t work, he will take on the case Ragoonath said the devil is quick to haunt people who turn away from God and allow themselves to become influenced by outside forces, such as heavy rock music, religious cults and some forms of parapsychology “It is my belief that if someone is not a Christian and he is not strong enough to fight the spirits off, they could possess him,” he said SIGNS OF DEMONS Demons usually manifest themselves through odd body movements, strange unusual bursts of strength, he said. They also present themselves in other ways. A Winnipeg woman reported seeing apparitions in her home until Ragoonath performed an exorcism there 18 months ago The woman, who refused to be interviewed, had visited a medium in England two years ago who told her she could contact her dead husband. When she returned home, the woman said she began seeing apparitions in her bedroom. Several times her bed in people voices and moved violently as if someone was shaking it The pastor said he prayed in the room for about 15 minutes and since then all has returned to normal. Ragoonath said he has never lost a battle with the devil and has never been afraid when he was performing an exorcism “I'm not afraid of people who are demon-possessed while I'm praying or involved in the process of it,” he said. “To me, it's a challenge.
