As we do so we remember also the horrors of war, and the powerful effect it had on all of society. Those of us who lived through World War II (and, even more so, World War I) are not likely to forget. War made an unforgettable impact on us. I have many sharp memories as a child during the Second World War, memories of the total involvement of the whole community in the “war effort”. | remember the hundreds of War Savings Stamps we bought in school, and the War Bonds they purchased. I remember the regular Red Cross Blood Donor Clinics that we assisted as Boy Scouts, knowing that much of that plasma was going overseas to save lives of wounded soldiers. I remember the regular accounts our teachers gave us in “Current Events” of developments in Europe and Asia, the King's stirring Christmas morning messages through the static and crackle of the radio, and the ongoing newspaper reports from the war zones. | remember the Victory Gardens that many families grew, with urban families turning their front lawns or boulevards into vegetable patches, doing their part by making more food ST DAMID'S ANGLICAN CHURCH 614 Christina Place : The Pi 8:00 am - Holy Communion - B.A.S. I remember the young men and women from our community who were called up for service, and the ongoing prayers in our churches for their safety. | remember the young man next door coming home on leave, proudly displaying his aviator's outfit, helmet, goggles and all. I also remember the young husband to whom | delivered newspapers, who had come home minus an arm. | remember my father, as a minister, having to make all too many calls on mothers and fathers to tell them that their son would not be coming home at all. And I remember the much happier events when young men came home, some of them with their “English War Brides” when “Peace” had been But at what cost? And how frail it was! The fact is that peace wasn't really achieved, only an armistice. And ever since there has probably never been a day when aggression or oppression was not happening between peoples, somewhere in the world. Ever since World War II Canadians have had a significant CASTLEGAR “Peacekeeping” role around the world. You are welcome here! Home of Castlegar Christian Academy 365-7818 . Pastor Stan Block 365-6317 seems more like “Peacemaking” than “Peacekeeping”. Peace remains very elusive. We need to remember that “Peace” is much more than just the absence of warfare. “Peace” is what exists when people are more concerned about the well-being of others than they are of themselves. It runs contrary to the self-seeking side of human nature, which seems to surface so much of the time. It happens when peace-filled hearts and minds actively seek right relationships between people, work for social justice in our society and world, focus on the needs and rights of others, rather than their own. Jesus Christ came into the world to bring peace. He taught that peace between people can only come about when they have found peace with God. His sacrificial death made the latter possible, and set the example of how we must live to bring about the former. Among His final words were these: “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” (John 14:27;16:33) As we remember the terrible consequences of peace-less living, let us remember also where peace begins in our own lives and seek it Wednesday November 10, 1993 Our Communi The Castlegar Sun Cares about REMEMBRANCE DAY KINSMEN PARK: Corner of 2nd Street and 9th Avenue , PARADE: Fall in at 10:30 March off at 10:40 PARADE MARSHAL: Comrade D.
