C4 CASTLEGAR NEWS, February 13, 1980 One man’s opinion Olympic boycott By FRED MERRIMAN John Trackstar was ‘born +f Nelson, son of a Greyhound bus driver. He started winning races in his third year at schoo! when first prize was a lollipop. At 15 he was fortunate, or unfortunate, depending on your point of view, to move with his family to Toronto, Ont. where track coaches recognized a reat runner. John found it necessary to commit his young life to the business of serious sprinting. He was able to carry on with school, just barely, because his entire daily routine was designed to train him for the 1980 Olympics in Moscow. John was not allowed to dateor go dancing. He could not drink soda pop or coffee. He had to be in bed by eight o'clock In the evening and up at four,to start the day with a 10-mile run, His diet was carefully controlled and even his moods and emotions were under the direct supervision of his coach. Trackstar was being groomed to bring back a gold medal for Canada. in ia — Russia that is — Serge, who was CU.
