During this same interval the approaches to the island were cleared and a chain-link fence with a vehicle gate and pedestrian gate was erected, and heavy picnic tables and benches constructed — again with the assistance of Gordan Hill and another Rotarian Frank McLeod and his . _ In June a second college team — Elizabeth Duckworth and George Apel — sponsored by the city and the B.C. Heritage Trust, began work on the history of the island and particularly its Indian heritage and the story of Alexander Zuckerberg. : i The work of the two teams has complemented one another ideally, if not entirely intentionally, so that access on the one hand has increased interest on the other. In any case, all of the summer's work will come together on Sunday at 2 p.m. when the work of the Rotary Club Park crew and the report of the heritage team is made available at “the public opening of ‘the park. The project was to have taken place between March 1 and Apri! 1, but failed to materialize. ‘y Undaunted, they made a second application under the Summer Canada Student Employment Program for 10 students and & $33,894 budget for 18 weeks. A final contract was signed in late April, 1988, for a four-student ‘crew, a 17-week period and $21,000 budget, with the Rotary club ‘undertaking up to one-third of the expenses and all on-site supervision and bookkeeping. é In anticipation of the successful bid for the Zuckerberg Island Park Improvement Project, I changed the five weeks prior to the opening date from the usual morning dog-walks to a cut-and-blaze operation, with limbloppers and surveyor’s tape, marking out a scenic, above high-water essential tools — chain saws, polaskis, rakes, shovels, ete., rs Teresa P Richards and Clarence Verigin for the park. project crew. With the approval of city council, the crew gathered on May 9 at the base of operations (the Charters’ house) where organization was laid down, instruction given and the work In consultation (as we did almost every day thereafter) since the project was seen as an asthetic and educational as well as financial (modest) operation, we agreed that the better paying jobe of foreman and first aid attendant would be rotated on a monthly basis giving each member a chance at the extra pay and experience. As supervisor I feel that it was one of our really good decisions. The crew was divided into two teams, male and female. Since the proposed path to the left of the road had a number of large rocks, the men were assigned to work this side and the women took the right side. ‘The two teams made good progress and soon met at the . south end of the island while the paths began to assume an always-been-there appearance. They then cleared dead-falls and th along both sides of the path to act as a fire-guard and to give a view of the river. Pile after pile of slash was burned along the rivers edge to be washed away by the steady rise of the water.
