The constitution states the object of this society shall be to increase and broaden the opportunity for the citizens of Castlegar and area and to enjoy and participate in cul- tural activities. It then goes on to state several ways in which this can be accomplished. Each year the members of the arts council must determine how it Best can fulfill this purpose, keeping in mind the realities of financial and facility lim- itations, the needs of the enthusiasts in the SUNSHINE BLOCK 442-2415 Dealer #6064 Ks YAMAHA ity and mainly the extent of volunteer time and expertise available. There are presently several vacancies on the executive and com- mittees for people interested in helping plan and facilitate workshops, performances and events. The general membership is composed of an annual av- erage of about 100 families and individuals. Member groups include the Castlegar Art Club, Castlegar Citizens Advocacy, Castlegar and Dis. trict Public Library, Castle. gar Writers Guild, Hobbit Hill Children’s Centre, Na tional Exhibition Centre, and Selkirk Weavers Guild. This year we have taken advantage of groups such as La Troupe Circus and Jest in Time, travelling across Can ada before returning to Mon. treal and Halifax, respec- tively, after performing at Expo 86. We have also. had the Debbie Brown Dancers from Vancouver. These have been large- budget events which needed extra financial support, through our own fundraising and grants received from the B.C. Cultural Fund Arts Re- source Touring subsidary The monthly art show, the presentation series, hosted by the Homestead Soup and Sandwich Shoppe began in November, 1984 with an ex hibition of work by Argenta artist Phyllis Margolin. Some of the other featured artists from the West Kootenay area were Alf Crossley, Maria Crossley, Sandra Groepler, Helen Gwillim, John De Jong, Brian O'Hara, Colin Pryce, May Richards, Mar jorie West and the Selkirk Weavers. These exhibitions give amateur and professional ar tists an opportunity to show their work and give the public a chance to view a wide variety of artwork. The continuation of the annual summer concerts i the part this July will mark the fifth year of free concerts. Local musicians are invited to inquire about performing at these noon hour concerts in the Kinsmen Park each Thursday in July. ‘This series is co-sponsored by the Downtown Business Association with generous assistance from CKQR radio, Castlegar News, Royal Can adian Legion Branch 1970 and the City of Castlegar Parks Department. The West Kootenay Re gional Arts Council sponsors the Regional Juried Art Ex hibition. The arts council as a member group helps to prom ote and facilitate these ex hibitions. This year the Langham Gallery in Kaslo is the host of the 8th annual event, from March 15 to April 5. Every: Groepler, Lynda Carter, touring; Mark Andrews and Ste, Margaret ’Carroll, membership. Sele- cted pieces will travel to the B.C. Festival of the Arts, to be held in Victoria in May. Also, as members of the Provincial Association the Assembly of B.C. Arts Coun: cils we have input and feed bacl on what is happening in B.C. A vast amount of in formation is funneled through the arts council, about what is available else where. Artists, musicians, dan. cers, writers and other cre- ative individuals are encour aged to enter their names and information in Artcom, a computerized provincial in- formation bank and service created by the ABCAC. As members of the B.C. Touring Council, a represen tative from the Castlegar group is a delegate to their annual showcase of perform ers available to tour around the province. This is an ex. cellent opportunity for repre. sentatives of smaller com. munities throughout B.C. to see, talk to and compare the entertainers and then be able to bring the information back to the arts council so that the next years programs may be planned. Several more events are planned for the spring. Ano- ther cabaret is planned for the end of April following a very successful cabaret — coffee house in January which featured non-stop local entertainment. In conjune- tion with SunFest an event is in the planning stages. More information will be forthcom ing later. Of course, none of the ac tivities of the Castlegar Arts Council would be possible without the efforts of hard- working volunteers, support and donations from local bus- inesses and organizations and a basic assistance grant from B.C. Cultural Fund (Ministry of Tourism, Recreation and Culture). Enthusiastic apprectation must be expressed to all who are or were involved in making the Castlegar Arts Council a community re. source successful. Anyone wishing a memb- ership, more information or having suggestions or energy to offer is invited to come to a meeting or contact president Eleanor Elstone. tes? iJ WEST'S Department Store Ltd.
