(CP) — A national television hookup on Canada’s future has underscored the grim possibility that the country may not have one. The electronic round -table, organized by the Citizens Forum on Canada’s Future, was supposed to be an upbeat start to the search for national reconciliation. But there seemed little room for consensus in the widely divergent views expressed on such issues as Quebec’s future in Canada, bilingualism and _ the aboriginal people. Two native people in Yellowknife told the forum, seen across the coun- try on CBC’s Newsworld and other cable channels, they feel like second- class citizens. They said the national debate is so focused on French and English, natives feel shut out. They took strong issue with Quebec panelists who insisted that only the French and English are Canada’s founding peoples. ““We were here first,’ rights of snapped IN MEMORY outdoors, her friends and family. The Quebecers said they feel that Canada has rejected them by rejec- ting the Meech Lake constitutional accord and they said they're tired of being trampled by the English majority. Several of the panelists from English Canada pleaded with the Quebecers to give the country another chance. “Quebec is part of what Canada is,” said New Brunswicker . Pat Darrah. ‘‘We do want them to stay, they make a difference in Canada.’’ But another New Brunswicker said bilingualism has gone too far and a Calgary businessman said Canada should revert to being unilingual English. “*We all speak English out here and I think it’s great we can all com- municate here,” said Stan Bucar, a semi-retired businessman in Calgary. Near the end of the 90-minute show, Diana Hu in Vancouver told the commissioners too much time had been spent listening to complain- ts from the four Quebec delegates. “*This is not a forum for Canadian unity, this is a forum for Quebec to speak their opinion,”’ she said. Host Laurier LaPierre labored to involve all the participants in the discussion. The forum wants to reach people who normally shy away from _ Public speaking and several seemed under the glare of television lights. But for all the problems, including more than its fair share of technical glitches, forum chairman Keith Spicer said he was pleased with the show. “There are no guarantees at all that the first time people chat they’re going to come to terms,”” he said when asked if he was disappointed by the lack of agreement. Earlier Tuesday, Spicer said the forum will cost at least $10 million but it’s a bargain if it will help save the country. He said the commissioners hope to hear from at least one million Canadians. Spicer unveiled the 14 questions he wants every Canadian to answer. People who want to participate can call the forum’s toll free num- bers and ask for discussion kits for groups or individuals. The 14 questions are in the kits along with report cards on which to record responses. Spicer said the forum will tabulate the report cards and distil the fin- dings for the final report. The Canadian Chamber of Com- merce will distribute the discussion kits — with the 14 quesions to all 500 of its local offices. The Canadian Bar Association will call upon its 38,000 members to volunteer their services as moderators at group discussions across the country. Coming Soon . . . See the Castlegar News of Wed.
