Closkey

It took 25 years, but the
powers that be finally got
around to Jack Closkey.

Long recognized by his
peers and his athletes as one of
the premier high school bas-
ketball coaches in the province,
Closkey was officially recog-
nized last week by Basketball
BC.

The vice-principal at Stan-
ley Humphries secondary
school was selected a recipient
of the Wink Award for out-
standing and ongoing volun-
teer service on behalf of minor
basketball in B.C.

“It’s kind of neat, because
you get nominated by other
people for it. It’s neat to think
there are other people out
there who think I’ve done some
work over a long period of
time,” said Closkey.

“It’s not something you try
to do. After you do this for 25
years it’s hard to realize you've
actually done | this for 25 years.
It’s amazing.”

Basketball league in the making

The big boys in Castlegar
basketball are looking to form a
local league this season.

With the news that the six-
team Nelson league has folded
its tent, local players Brian
Turlock and Wayne McCarthy
are trying to move the show to
alocal stage. ~

The plan, said Turlock, is to
take the four remaining teams
from the Nelson League —
Castlegar, Salmo, South Slocan
and Winlaw — perhaps add a
couple more local teams, then find
an available gym to use.
