She was home for a visit be- fore and had come, she said, to thank the club for all it had done in promoting her career. After graduating in 1974 and going on to further studies in English in the United Program. allows gifted students to take post-graduate degrees any- where in the world. They are nominated by lo- cal clubs, undergo a rigid se- lection by Rotary Internation- al for the university of their choice either in the academic or technical field of advanced studies. Dr. Pepper told Rotarians: “I was studying for my doctor- al degree at the University of Warwick in England at the time of the Rotary World Con- ference was held there and be- ing in Britain as your repre- sentative was a real privilege. I was able to speak to a number of Rotary clubs and to tell them about Celgar, Com- inco and about our Columbia valley.” : She also obtained a fellow- ship to study Portuguese at the University of Lisbon in Portugal which was a great help to her in the preparation of her doctoral thesis entitled: “The development of Penta- costalism in north-eastern Brazil; with specific reference to working-class women in Re- cife.” Asked what she felt had been the greatest value in her extensive studies she said, “The realization of the value of discipline which goes beyond any particular studies and has a universal application to life in general. It is not some- thing,” she continued, “which is sufficiently recognized in our public education system. “It has given me an appre- ciation of the great diversity of people and much broader view of life.” In closing she gave special credit to Rotarian and teacher, Roger Plant “for his tremen- dous help and encouragement in her work.” Feature speaker for the evening Sandra Groepler ad- dressed the group on behalf of Rural Dignity, a group oppos= ing Canada Post’s program of closure of rural post offices across the country (1,200 since 1986) and the alleged privati- zation of postal services in Canada. At the business meeting which followed Rotarians and the public were reminded that applications for RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Assembly) were now due. As you will recall in previous articles, a formal questionnaire was mailed out to a randomly chosen sample of homes. Of the 465 residents surveyed 233, or 50.1 per cent, completed and returned their survey form. In addition, the survey was printed in local newspapers and 53 of these were completed and returend to city hall. The results of the survey have been tabu- lated and are currently being reviewed by the OCP Update Committee. Once the committee and Urban Systems Ltd. — the consulting planners and engi- neers — have discussed the planning issues and implications of the survey, they will start to set objectives and policy direction for the plan. An afternoon and evening public input session to discuss ideas on land use and com- munity character is going to be held in The City Voice Castlegar on July 9. The survey results will be presented at that time. This workshop will also be used to present the Comprehensive Development Plan for public review and to set the stage for plan- ning discussions. Keep your eyes open for the time and place of the public meetings in future arti- cles and follow-up coverage on “Castlegar Beyond the Crossroads”. _ Pancakes jes, Eggs, PANCAKE BREAKFAST Saturday, June 27 — 7:00 a.m. Sunday, June 28 — 7:30 a.m. Castleaird Plaza ADULTS $4.00 SENIORS (over 65) $3.00 CHILDREN (under 6) $2.00 Sponsors: SuperValu, Purnel Distributors Ltd., Trowelex
