OUR GREAT MINE, Few in our own midst appreciate the progress being made in the Le Roi, and the vast amount of ore it contains. The matter is always pre- sented in a more interesting light by an outsider and this is the way it impressed Mr. Clarence McCuaig, | asaresult of his recent visit to Rossland: “We visited Rossland and met Mr. .Bernard MacDonald, general manager of the British America cor- poration, ot London, England, which owns the Le Roi, No. 1, Josie, An- nie, Nickel Plate, Great Western, Columbia. & Kootenay, etc. In company with Mr. MacDonald, we inspected the Le Roi, and no words could express our amazement at the remarkable development of that great mine under Mr. MacDonald’s skillful management. Two years ago he told me that ore existed in the mine outside of what was com- monly supposed to be the walls, ind his work has not only proved that he was correct, but has also dem- onstrated beyond question that the Le Roi is one of the greatest mines in the world. The main shaft is now down goo feet, and the mine is thoroughly opened up to a depth of 800 feet. On some of the levels the ore is being stoped for a width uf 107 feet, and faces Go and 70 feet wide are common. Outside of this vein other parallel. veins have been proved to exist, and tle between the Iron Mask and Cen- tre Star companies, reached last night by an agreement out of court. ‘The law proceedings from first to last have cost an enormous sum— more than a quater of a million dollars; but that expense is not without its compensations. Chief among these is the fact that this litigation has resulted in a close and accurate study of the physical fea- tures and mincral formation of that part of Red mountain, and the knowledge thus acquired will be of incalculable benefit both to the mine owners and to the general public. , PUSH IT ALONG. Now the eastern papers are taking the matter in hand and the Toronto World pre- sents the matter in this very concise paragraph: A “Canada produces much more pig lead than she requires for her own uses, And yet we are import- ing 7000 tons of white lead annually from Germany! The statement would hardly be credited if the blue books did not corroborate the fact. We might as well import wheat and butter from Great Brit- ain as white lead from Germany. We are an exporting country of both products, and the idea.ot im- porting the one is as ridiculous as our importing the other. What is required to break up the grip Ger- many has on the Canadian market is the impos‘tion of a protective duty on white lead, litharge and other articles of which lead is the base. We havea duty of 35 per cent. on lead pipe, with the result that we’ manufacture that article ourselves. On white lead, litharge, etc., the duty ranges from nothing to five per cent., which, of course, affords no protection whatever. The white lead industry has reached large proportions in the Unitee States, and there is no reason why it should not become a proportion- ately important industry in Canada. The miners of British Columbia are tiking a firm stand on this ques- tion.” : EDITORIAL NOTES. The second Thursday, in Oc- toker is the date fixed, for the holding of the next Conservative convention, and Revelstoke is the ‘place chosen. A. G. Berry, late secretary to the Australian delegates, boasts that under the new law Australia will have a wider suffrage than the United States or Canada, It is known that a number of American soldiers contemplate set- tling permanently in the Philippines. Now it is officially announced that probably 15,000 British troops will settle on South African soil. In commenting on this fact, H. A. Bryden, a well known writer, sug- gests that half a million pounds sterling would not be too [much to spend inQstate-aided immigration, He thinks some such measure the key to the problem in South Africa.
