Lois Glebotf ond Tim Pretty, a mentally handicapped 23-year-old, have . By ADRIAN CHAMBERLAIN Staff Writer Tim Pretty and his friend Lois Gleboff are sitting around the kitchen table of his Castlegar apartment chatting. The pair dririk black coffee, complain about the heat of the hot summer évening, gossip, and laugh while exchanging reminiseences about good times past. It's a typieal, friendly, normal scene; most people take for granted But Pretty and Gleboff don't.take their easy-going friendship for granted. For Pretty — a mentally handi. capped 23-year-old who has his own apartment and own job — the so-called “normal” aspects of life: friendships, shopping, jobs, apartments; are all haxuries that must be struggled for, The friendship between Pretty and Gleboff —a cashier at a local food store — is also a victory for the Castlegar Citizen Advocacy volunteer, program. This self-supporting program attempts to match up mentally handicapped individuals with non-handieapped people. The idea behind this is to provide a dependable friend for a lly person; with whom he or she can he fishing. to a ball game, or along on a family outing But the citizen advocacy program goes beyond providing mere companionship for the mentally handicap- ped, says coordinator Lynn Beal. something ASNEWS FEATURE REPORT established ao unique relationship under the Castlegar Citizen Advocacy program Costews Photo by Adrian Chomberlo: Handicapped get boost Those who befriend mentally handicapped indi viduals through the program attempt to instill in them a sense of individuality and self-respect a feeling of fitting into the community. It's allowing the mentally handicapped to have the same type of choices, (as others); there's so much control in the lives of the mentally handicapped,” she said Gleboff, who was already a friend of Pretty’s before their relationship was formalized through the program agrees “Tim is learning he is an individual, and it’s up to him,” she said while drinking coffee in Pretty's neat, comfortable apartment. And he's very capable of making decisions Ninety-nine times out of a hundred, they're the right de cisions.” Gleboff has been Pretty’s friend for almost two years now, and helps him with money management, used to help him with shopping until he learned to do it himself. helps him plan meals and cecasionally looks over his apartment to make sure everything's alright. “If Tim ever needed a lawyer, I would go with him to see about that, or if Tim needs a doctor . . . It’s just like he’s mine, except you do anything possible with or for him, except the things be an do himself,” she said “(But) you have to be very careful, because you can fall into a role where you're being very much like « mother,” Gleboff added. continved on page AZ ‘POOR MARKETS’ Sawmill to close for three weeks Citing weak domestic markets and a delay in a key export order, Westar Timber announced this week it will shut down its Celgar sawmill for three weeks. Al Blessin, sawmill industrial rela tions manager, told the Castlegar News the mill will be closed starting Monday, until July 27 However, Blessin said the planer mill, shipping and processing depart ments will continue to operate through the closure to clear up the mill's in ventory “We'll be processing our rough lum ber inventory,” explained Blessin in an interview. “Our plan is for the planer to operate on a two-shift basis for the full three weeks.” Blessin was unable to give an estimate of the number of employees affected by the closure He said the company has asked em ployees to take holidays during the shutdown “A large majority are co-operating with that request,” he said He added the mill will try to accom modate employees who have already taken holidays or who have planned holidays at another time and cannot change them. The sawmill employs 300 workers, including staff. Blessin said the mill should be “back on stream” after the shutdown. “Our aim is to start again at the end of three weeks,” he said. However, market conditions may have some effect on the return to work, he added. Blessin said demand for lumber has fallen off at the same time that prices have: dropped. “We've got very low demand and damn low prices,” he said As an example, he said lots of two-by-four fir, pine and spruce are selling for less than $130 U.S. In “good times” the price is where around $200 U.S.” “It's just not economical” to operate the mill for the domestic market,” Blessin said. The $130 price “doesn't even cover our log cost,” he added. The mill had been cutting an export order for Algeria, however, the ship scheduled to take the order has been delayed Still, the mill's export orders have been its lifeline. “Our export orders us going,” Blessin said He said the mill has another export order for Australia to cut when it re turns after the shutdown. The Celgar operation moved to cutting shipments for overseas cus tomers about 18 months ago “some are keeping SIDESTEPS QUESTIONS Turner meets Queen By PAUL KORING LONDON (CP) — Prime Minister Turner met privately Saturday night with the Queen at Windsor Castle. Canadian officials have said Turner will seek alternative dates for this month's planned royal visit which would clear the way for an expected summer election. But Turner continued to sidestep all questions about what he would say to the Queen. “I said that I would be talking about that when I got home to Canada, not here,” he said before his motorcade headed for the castle. Later, Turner's aides said the prime minister and the Queen met alone before dinner. Turner and his wife Geills stayed overnight at Windsor before flying back to Ottawa today. After a meeting with cabinet Monday morning, Turner has called an afternoon news confer ence. Earlier Saturday, Turner spent four hours at Chequers, the official country home of British prime minister in the Chiltern Hills west of the capital. It was Turner's first meeting with British Prime Minister Margaret That. cher, and the talks were described by officials at 10 Downing Street as being a “very friendly tete-a-tete.” The luncheon meeting which stret ched through the afternoon also in cluded Lord Carrington, the newly ap- pointed secretary general of NATO and a former British foreign secretary. Geills Turner, Canada’s high com missioner to London Don Jamieson, the newly appointed British high commis. sioner to Ottawa Sir Derek Day, and their wives also attended the luncheon. But Thatcher's husband Denis was absent “If the truth be known,” Thatcher was reported to have said by a Cana dian official, “Dennis is playing golf in Scotland.” Thatcher's husband, a retired oil company executive, is regularly lam Women naked during court appearance By CasNews Staff Two women from the Sons of Free dom sect charged with arson nude Thursday throughout a Castlegar provincial court appearance. The pair were in court to have a date set for their preliminary hearing. Mary Braun, 63, and Tina Jmseff, 59, were pushed into the courtroom on wheelchairs, each wearing only a yellow blanket. They removed the blankets to reveal themselves. Jmaeff then recited a prayer in Russian as about 30 supporters at the hearing stood up to acknowledge the recital. Braun and Jmaeff sat impassively while the charge of wilfully setting fire to the Kootenay Doukhobor Historica! Village was read out. RCMP arrested the women after a fire June 29 partially destroyed a porch and caused smoke damage to a re stored house at the museum. The preliminary hearing has been set for Sept. 27 at Castlegar provincial court. When presiding Judge S.W. Ender. ton asked the women whether they wanted to be tried by judge, or judge and jury, Braun avoided the isepe, say ing through an interpreter: “(We) are one of Ged, (we) are the living story of the D Crown counsel Bill Heflin asked the judge if the preliminary hearing could be held in Nelson, saying it is better equipped, has better security, and can hold more spectators in the gallery According to Heflin, Castlegar RCMP have indicated to him that the local detachment would find it diffieult to provide security for a preliminary hearing due to lack of manpower But Judge Enderton questioned whether security would be better in Nelson provincial court, and later an nounced that the hearing would be held in Castlegar When the judge asked Jmaeff whe ther she would like the preliminary hearing in Nelson, she replied, through the interpreter, “We give ourselves to God, and let God's court decide.” Braun indicated through the inter. preter that both she and Jmaeff don't intend to engage a lawyer for their de fence Both Braun and Jmaeff were re leased by Solicitor General Robert Kaplan from the Matsqui Regional Psychiatric Centre about eight months ago after going on a prolonged hunger strike. They were serving time for arson The two will be held at the Lower Mainland prison until their September hearing pooned in England for his devotion to the game. Turner ordered his Rolls-Royce lim. ousine stopped just outside Chequers's imposing Tudor gates to talk briefly with reporters after the meetings. He said the talks covered East-West tensions, the problems plaguing inter national economic recovery and the Anglo-Canadian relationship. The prime minister also said he as sured Carrington that “Canada would remain a solid partner in NATO.” Canada commits a smaller portion of its gross national product than do any of the 16 NATO countries, save for tiny Luxembourg, and has been accused of not pulling its weight in the alliance But Turner said there was much ‘statistical confusion as to which coun try is dedicating which percentage of which gross national product to our mutual defence budgets.” However, he added that he told Car rington he “would be looking person ally into the situation.” NO MORE 9:30 IN NFLD.? ST. JOHN'S, NFLD. (CP) — The provincial government is going to be asked by municipalities to bring the island of Newfoundland into the Atlantic time zone. The provincial federation of mu- nicipalities says there is no need to have clocks set half an hour later in Newfoundland than in Labrador and the Maritime provinces. from the island because of the New- foundland time zone and the differ- ence is a nuisance for businesses that deal with the mainland. An old argument against making Newfoundland’s clocks conform with the mainiand’s was that night would fall so early that school children would be walking home in the dark. However, Reid said schools are out earlier these days, usually before 3 p.m. for younger pupils. The proposal was made by a Labrador mayor, Hank Shouse at the federation's recent annual meet- ing and will be supported in a presentation the group is putting together for the government.
