ROSSLAND EVENING RECORD |™: BY EGER C, SMITH, Published every day (except Sunday) ind Weekly DAILY: Ono Year in Advance Six Moutus Ove Meuth By Cazrier by Single copy One Year, in advance Six mouths, 'n advance Single copy.- Gf MONDAY, MAY 24, 1897. A SIXTY YEAR REIGN. Every loyal Canadian and British sub- ject feels a just pride in observing today, the day that commemorates the birth of one of the world’s greatest rulers. Life is but a passing breath as marked on the dial of time, but so many remarkable historical events have thundered along down the corriders of time during her majesty’s sixty years reign, that future generations will reverance that name. Placed on the throne during turbulent times when vicious factions were trying to send the kingdom to pieces, and when a single unwise action meant terrible consequences, she has ruled with a firm, kindly, gracious hand that showed the enemies of liberty and welded the ties of friendship to all fac- tions. Her whole longjreign is a shin- ing path of good acts and kind deeds that will shine and light the way us long as a British subject remains in ex- istence. Her Majesty has always been the friend of the suffering, poor and dis tressed. By her wise policy she has “geen continents added to her domains until at present she is ruler over a land that the sun never sets upon. Of all her adopted lands Canada has come in for the largest share of her bounty. The of this Domi have reason to feel proud, be thankful, and celebrate this day of all others, for assistance received at her gracious hands. Therefore we, in concert with every * loyal subject, take pleasure in saying “all hail thy majesty, the greatest of great rulers!” We note with pleasure the number of red flags unfurling | their folds to the breeze in to- There is no public question today of one-half the importance to this city as tthe smelter question. Lose not sight of this fact. The Datuy Recorp is by far the beet, local advertising medium in Rossland. irst, because its subscription list ex- *° | ceeds that of all the other papers pub- lished in Rossland and because the street sales are three times larger than any other paper printed here. Add to these the fact that we never take ad- vantage of not issuing on holidays, and get out numerous extras, it leaves the Récorp pre-eminently the bet medium whereby to reach the people of this city. In yesterday’s issue of the i Mistake there were less than two col- umns of local news, a half column of that being a ‘paid write-up” and the balance a re-hash from the Recoxp. The rest of the rag was folded about Nelson, Kaslo, Grand Forks, Quartz Creek, Trail—anything but Rossland. The Morning Apology isa poor excuse for a local newspaper and has done more to build up outside towns than it has for Rossland. OUR QUEEN. “Many daughters have done virtuous- ly, but thou excells them all,”— Prov. xxxi., 29. Beloved Queen and Empress, we Who kept with joy thy jubilee, New songs most grateful raise. We offer up our praise to Him, Enthroned amidst the Seraphim, Who lengthens out thy days. No reign of all thy noble line Can be compared at all with thine— Sixty illustrious years. A glorious reign! Excelling all, Yet hast thou bowed beneath the. pall, Baptized with many tears. Nature’s “one touch”—the movarner’s tear, As Wife and Mother, made thee dear To those oppressed with grief. From kindly heart thy message sent, Of sympathy, with sorrow blent, Has often borne reliei. Sovereign ne’er laid on Patriot's shrine A heart and life more pure tham thine, Our most beloved Queen! Vicissitudes and war’s alarins Ne aa fond thy Womanhood at arms, day. What givesus greater pleasure however, is to observe the Union Jack and the Star Spangled banner, the representative flags of the greatest na tions waving side by side in friendly unison. In the brilliant light cast by the Queen’s noble acts, the two nations stand grasping each others’ hands in brotherly love, all petty jealousies being forgot, and vicing each other in showing respect to one who has always uplifted her hand in the cause of right and justice. GIVE THEM A CHANCE. There isa whole lot of premature, useless and unnecessary kicking and fault-finding about the conduct of the mayor and city council concerning street grading, sewerage and fire protection, established grades, etc., and some are complaining about the high wages paid the workmen upon the streets and the salary list. To be sure most of these complaints are coming from defeated did and their i di friends presumably for political purposes. They are crying aloud about the general dis- satisfaction and saying that if another election could be held now the present city officials would be ignominiously de- feated. Their sincerity can very justly ’d, serene. “The meek and quiet spirit’” sheds On earthly courts and crowed heads A glory all its own. Toronto, Canada, 1897. ——_ HOT WORDS FROM THE PULPIT. Toronto Divine Scourges Those Who Voted for Sunday Cars. Rey. J. C. Speer preached on the Sun- day car question in Toronto the day after the defeat of the proposed law, from the text, ‘‘Prophesy unto us who itis that smote thee.” Extracts of his sermon as published in the Toronto Star appear below. Caiaphas, the high priest, represented the mayor of Jerusalem, and Christ was taken before him, and it was he whogave the signal when the mob rushed on Christ and smote him. Christ repre- sented labor. He was the carpenter's son, He ropressated Yot youth, the old and church. be ioned, and their ji now is probably worth no more than it was before election when they were boast- ing and even betting on majorities for their candidates, It would be more fair for them to wait a while and give the new administration a chance. The Recorp is of the opinion that the mayor and city council are doing what they believe to be right, and for the best interests of the greatest number. The Recorp will in the futureas in the past, criticise what it believes to be wrong, without fear or favor, bu we be- lieve it only fair and right to give the present administration a chance, and that is why we refuse at this time, to join the rabble in abusing Mayor Scott and his accociates, the council. We undertstand that our morning contemporary is excusing itself from taking any part in the recovery of the two dead bodies, victims of the landslide by saying that the Recorp has been compensated by a subscription. Of course the Miner people would not willingly mis- represent the facts. The whole expense is not great in the face of the statement made by the Miner that Corbin was ex- cusable for not making any further effort to recover these bodies because it would be the “next thing to impossible’ The expenses were $109.20. There has been paid in $52.75. This leaves the Recorp’s contribution $56.45. If the Miner will come over and verify these figures and give us its check for half that amount we will drop the subject. —_—_—_—_—_—— Let not holiday, Sunday, feast or famine cause the citizens of Rossland to lose sight of the fact that there are smelters to be built to treat the ores of this section. Let not a stone be un- turned, the turning of which will add one iota to the possibiblity of getting these smelters located at Rossland. The man that smites tho laborer smites Jesus Christ. We believe it will go on and on until Rossland can boast-of a population of 50,00u. After that it will probably settle down to a proposition of a pay roll but not for four or five years. There are millions of moncy here from all sections of the globe; but the principal investors are from the United States, with Canada largely interested.’ ‘Lhe history of the camp reads like a fairy tale, and the fabulous riche? are’ scarcely excelled by the imaginary “King Solomon's Mines.” We will not attempt to discuss the mines in u single ar- ticle, as we have been writing about them for uearly two years and have not been able to keep up with them, The ore ship- ment& speak for themselves.
