Speculation has been fuell- ed by heavy trading of Dis- ney stock on the New York Stock Exchange since early March, by the growing stakes owned by two of the largest shareholders and by cessful suitor to win more than 80 per cent of the 34.7 million outstanding shares. But Disney's considerable assets are eye-catching: e Disney's rich library of films, most of which have never appeared on television, is valued at $300 million to $500 million. ¢ The company’s extensive land holdings in Florida and California could be worth hu of millions. financial ring by Disney management. But analysts note that the price would be high — esti- mates have placed it at al- most $3 billion — and the Two recent Disney films, Never Cry Wolf and Splash, might turn around the com- pany's faltering film division. e Earnings, down 30 per cont since 1980, may have caused undervaluation of the company's stock. ‘Nor Disney executives are say- ing publicly they aren't wor- ried about a takeover at- tempt, At the same time, however they have armed themselves with a $1.3-mil- lion line of credit they could use to fend off even the most ardent of suitors. One of those suitors may be New York financier Saul Steinberg, whose Reliance Financial Services Inc. has scooped up 8.3 per cent. of Disney's stock in the last month at a cost of $182.9 million. But so far, Steinberg has said he is buying Disney PRE SR Se Hs poses only. swain could be Roy E. Disney, another purchase last week, which increased his family’s holdings to four per cent of Disney's 34.7 million total shares. Rumors persist that Roy, March 9 and has been at odds with Disney president and chief executive officer Ron Miller, may be planning takeover attempt. Roy Disney also has not said publicly what his initen. tions -are. Analysts point out that anyone attempting # take- over would need a lot of wherewithal. Some estimate that Disney stock, whieh has been trading around $66 = share, could reach $865 a share in a takeover attempt. “Nothing is ever prohibi- tive, but it’s awfully hard to make a cogent case for a takeover given the run-up in the (stock) price versus the earnings,” says R. TOKYO (CP) — Although Honda Motor Co. has been at pains to deny a report that it has decided to build an auto plant in Eastern Canada which will begin production in 1986, there are definite signs the Japanese auto- maker is close to a decision on the $88.9-million (U.S.) project. Tokyo sources close to negotiations between Honda and Canadian government officials indicated Tuesday that an announcement, most likely favorable, is expected within the next few months. Honda is pursuing an ag- gressive policy aimed at making the company the No. 1 foreign automaker in North America by the beginning of the next decade and a Cana- dian plant is seen as sup- porting that policy. The company already has a plant in Marysville, Ohio, where it plans to double its production of motorcycles and Accord cars in the next few years. On the surface, that would appear to lesson the chances of a Canadian operation. But if the company can work out an agreement to receive the same status as American automakers under the U.S.- Canadian auto pact, a Can- adian plant might concen- trate on producing another model for the whole North American market. Labor is not a great con- cern for Honda, the Tokyo sources said. valley landscape nursery | rch Supply Ltd. For All Your FENCING NEEDS bm INDUSTRIES LTD. Chein Link. Dome Mines reported Tuesday it lost $216.4 million or $3.09 a share in 1983, * compared with a loss of $74.6 million or $1.07 a share a year earlier. “The losses in 1983 and 1982 are primarily attribu- table to the company’s equity accounted share of the losses reported by Dome Petro leum,” a company statement said.
