However, a University of Guelph animal and pultry science student says they have another use. Leah Braithwaite of nearby Kitchener has found that microwave techology can be used to incubate baby chicks. The heat source, unlike that from fossil fuel energy, warms only the eggs, not the air and the building around them. may last longer TORONTO (CP) — Straw- berry lovers who mourn the short-lived domestic harvest when the season ends each June could soon be enjoying the fruit all through summer, a University of Guelph pro- fessor says. Prof. Alan Sullivan of the university's horticultural sci- ence department is leading a research team in trying to stagger the berries’ appear- ances over seyeral months, which would extend Ontar- io’s strawberry | season to as late as LOOKOUT-LIKE TURRETS Dream homes changing By PATTI TASKO TORONTO — Ask a dozen people to describe their dream home and you'll probably get a dozen different answers. For some, it might be a walk-in closet in every room; for others, an automatic vacuuming system that sucks up dust before it can land on the furniture. Designer Allan Ross’s dream home — the star attraction at this spring’s Toronto Home Show — looked like what you'd get if you asked a bunch of yuppies to build a fort. Made of red cedar from British Columbia, the $650,000 home featured lookout-like turrets, an assort- ment of odd-shaped balconies and decks, bathrooms every few metres, and an open-concept layout with lots of white couches and glass tables scattered about. NEED HELP It was a bizarre mixture of 180s opulence and Sullivan said in an inter- view he and the researchers believe a proven European growing technique called the “waiting bed” system could result in fresh, local straw- berries all summer long. The team began growing specially prepared plants last May in beds with a high con- centration of plants. The runners were trimmed and then cultivated in the waiting beds with close attention to fertilizing, irrigation and weed control, to promote large or multiple crowns. By early November, when fall ‘dormancy arrived, the researchers had vigorous plants with high potential yield for the next season, Sullivan explained. The plants were then dug out of the waiting beds and put into cold storage. “All we have to do now is take them out of cold storage at various intervals this spring and summer and plant them in normal cropping beds,” he said. “As they ma- ture, we expect they'll pro- vide a continuous supply of fruit ‘well past the usual June-bearing season.” STEADY SOURCE Sullivan said an extended season would give commer- cial processors of frozen, canned and preserved straw- berries a steady source of produce all summer, which would pave the way for growth in the industry. “Right now, provessors can only run their production lines for a short time because of the berry’s brief appear- ance,” he said. “This tech- nique would maximize the use of their equipment and make it more worth their while to develop a product.” AUCTION Location Russell Auction House Thrums, 8 Miles North of Castlegar on Hwy. 3A Sunday, June 7 1P.M. 400 TO 500 LOTS ON SALE! *°77 HONDA CIVIC#'68 JEEP WAGON 4x494 HP OUTBOARD Due to the closing of Verna's Flower Shop, we are selling all stock, displays & supplies. * 100 PLANTS * VASES © ROLLS OF RIBBON * COPPERWARE * WICKER * CANDLES * CASH REGISTER * OFFICE DIVIDERS * OUTSIDE SIGN * GROWING LIGHT ® STEM CLIPPING TOOL — OTHER CONSIGNMENTS — ‘* RECORDERS © 16 mm PROJECTOR * VIDEO RECORDERS '* TYPEWRITERS * ASSORTED HOUSEHOLD ITEMS SHARP CHALLENGING OPPORTUNITY residential services THE POSITION Is that of the riers for the Nondbeeeen Castlega non-profit society providing vocarional and jor a number of adults with mental handicaps d for the i Branch, a back-t Ross, of the archi of G. Randall Guthrie in Toronto, designed the house for a make-believe affluent family of middle-aged parents with four teenagers and hired help. The dream home is a feature of the home show but varies wildly in concept each year. In the past it has been a log house, an underground earth shelter and a futuristic castle. It is built, decorated, landscaped, opened for visitors and then torn down all in the space of three weeks. This year's home was two-storey, with wood — lots of it — everywhere. Rather than being stained the wood was painted with several light coats of white paint, giving it a bleached effect. Visitors walked through a wide front entrance into a so-called “great hall” in the centre of the home and open to the second floor. lik currently used in only about 1,600 homes in this country, said Manfred Heidinger, who markets the system in Canada. He said that masonry heating produces waves that do not heat the air, as in conventional heating, but the objects in a house, like furniture or people. The objects, in turn, radiate heat. This means there are no hot or cold spots or noticeable air movements, he said. Heat is produced in the stove's firebox, then stored for long periods in the masonry body of the stove which is warm, but not hot, to the touch. Almost any fuel, from wood to gas, can be burned in the stove, which can be used alone or in combination with other heating methods. LOAN-OUT AMERA The Castlegar News has two simple- to-operate loan-out cameras (complete with film) which it is pleased to allow groups to use for taking pictures for use by the Castlegar News. Arrangements for the use of these cameras should be made through our News Department at 365-3517. se. Castlégar News Surrounding the hall, in a hexag were a study, a sun-room, a dining room, a large kitchen, the master suite, and a spa area visible from open stairs leading to the second floor. Upstairs there was a bedroom suite, including bathroom, in each corner of the house — one for a mail, two for children and one for guests. All were accessible from a cireular hallway open to the great hall below. The house was furnished in a southwestern U.S. theme by interior designer John Shields of De Boer’s, a Toronto-based furniture retailer. The great hall, for instance, featured simple white leather couches, black carpet, a tiger skin and large pillows in tan and white with a Navajo blanket-like design. The other rooms continued the neutral color scheme and introduced accent colors like aqua, peach and muted green. HEAT WITH STOVE Two special innovations in the house were the heating system, centred on a masonry stove that was part of the fireplace in the great hall, and the use of a new type of wood product made of long strands of veneer bonded together by a waterproof adhesive. MacMillan Bloedel Ltd., which manufactures the wood under the trade name Parallam, says the product is one of the strongest wood. based building materials in the world: = The masonry stove, an idea imported from Europe, is LOOK, LOOK $45,000... - REPEAT $45, 000 duced for TWO This WEEKS ONLY to $45,000.
