The city’s Public Works have erected a sign on Arrow Lakes Drive, warning resi- dents not to drink water from a free-flowing tap. The sign reads, “this water source is not safe for human consumption. Use at own risk.” People have been drinking water from the tap for several years. Superintendent of Pub- lic Works Barry Comin said the sign went up at the re- quest of the Central Kootenay Health Unit. Comin said they were advised the water con- tained high coliform counts and should take action by posting the sign. Environmental health offi- cer Ed Walsh said the water is prone to contamination be- cause it is surface water. “From our experience, I’ve yet to see an open body of wa- ter that’s not contaminated,” Walsh said. Even having one coliform in the water is contaminated.” “That sign should have been up years ago,” chief envi- ronmental health officer Mike Harnadek said. “It’s always been dangerous. It’s not dis- infected, it’s surface water.” Asked if the city was think- ing of closing the tap, Comin said it is unlikely. “Not really no, (but) we were thinking of taking that spout out.” Christmas scam has RCMP warning public Neil Rachynski NEWS REPORTER A Christmas telephone scam appears to be making the local rounds. Castlegar RCMP Cpl. Al Hudema said a person pur- porting to be with the Robson Volunteer Fire Department has been soliciting funds from local residents. Robson fire chief Bob Tay- lor said his department is con- ducting no fund raising cam- paign whatsoever. “Somebody is taking advan- tage of people’s goodwill at this time of season,” Taylor said. “I'm _ concerned somebody might be taken in by it.” Taylor said the calls began Wednesday. Apparently the person asks for $35 up front and $59 two weeks later. Neither Taylor nor the po- lice know what the sales pitch is, or where the money is sup- posed to be sent. Taylor said he is aware of people having been contacted in Ootischenia and Raspberry. Hudema said one resident who had been called said it sounded like a young female that was soliciting the funds. Hudema warned people to take precautions, such as ask- ing for a phone number to call the person back. If they don’t give a number, be suspicious. Selkirk petitions for day care NEWS STAFF A dream is about to be realized. Selkirk College has been talking about the need for a day care for some time. But now that the provincial government has come up with the cash, Selkirk is knocking on doors. “We’ve discussed it before with the (government), but this is the first time we've put in a proposal,” college president Leo Per- ra said. A Day Care Centre Committee has been struck to study what type of facility the college needs, but the Perra said they are looking at something about 2,000 square feet. * “It will be developed primarily for the use of students and then staff. “It will be structured around the operating needs of the stu- dents.” LAST MINUTE GIFT IDEAS 1 0%. 50 orr In The Ladies, Fabrics Linens Departments OUR EXTENDED HOLIDAY HOURS Tues., Dec. 22-9 a.m.- 9 p.m. Wed., Dec. 23 - 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Thurs., Dec. 24 — 9 a.m.-5:30 p.m. For the finishing touches Stocking S \ NY s 3 WN WSS BONNETT'S MEN'S WEAR 233 Columbia Ave., Castlegar 365-6767 : S QOS NS Courtesy S| Gift Wrapping!
