In treating any of the three latter di- visions, viz: Silicates, oxides and car- bonates, I have found the following to be as good a formula as any. ¥OR SILICATES, Sodium bi-carbonate 1 a. t. Pot. carbonate. Use the above mixture vad: 2° light gover of borax glass. Fuse,80 minutes ina hot fire and pour. For oxide’ ores use same as for silicates and add a amall amount of silica, For carbonate ores use same ag above, only add from one- fourth to one-half assay ton of powder- ed silica, or you may lessen the carbon- tea. Thus it will be seen that any ores except sulphides may be assayed with a very simple flux with very little modifi- cationg to euit the division to which they belong. SULPHIDES AND TELLURIDES. SO-CALLED EXPERTS DISCUSSED The Cyanide and Smelting Treat- ments Explained and Compared. iN [Written forthe Rzconn) In with I contribute the following article on the latest. western methods for the assay and othertreatment of ores ofthe Western United States and Canada. ASBAYING, * From an assayer’s atandpoint the acience of aseaying has been soimproved upon that it has been. narrowed down to ively simple i At the present time only three metals are assayed by the fire assay. All other met- als are assayed by the wet process, and in the sesay for lead the wet assay -is rapidly taking the place of the fire aseay, as it is much more accurate and can be made in less time and at less cost to the assayer. For the gold, silver and lead. assay it is only necessary that the agsayer be enfficiently familiar with mineralogy to place the ore in one of four grand divis- fone, viz: Sulphides, sificates, carbon- ates and oxides. By the term sulphides is meant a compound of sulphur and one metal, although there may be two or more sulphides mixed in one piece of ore, e. g. sulphur aud iron, sulphur and copper, sulphur and lead, etc., etc. Silicates means quartz, quartzite, eandstone, flint, etc. Carbonates mean limestone, marble and some varieties of spar. By the terms oxides is meant a com- pound of metal and some other element the same as sulphide ores, the only diff- erence is that about. three times the amount of lead and flour enough to bring down a 35 or 40 g. m. button acorily button down to usual size and cupils. WEIGHTS AND MEASURES, Since the Assay Ton .weights and the Metric system of weights: and measures havej}been adopted by the, assayers, any man who understands fractions and dec- imals can readily calcuJate the value of any assay. Thus it will be seen that assaying is no longer the dark and mys- tic art of twenty yeara ago. WESTERN METHODS. The methods I have described are strictly western. Eastern assayers who come west find it necessary to revise their education when they come to oper- ate in the hot bed of actual competition. But the western_methods have their bad points just like any other practice. In the west I am sorry to say that eighty per cent. of the men. who call themselves assayera are not entitled to the name. In eight out of ten assay offices you find nothing but a sign board a few old tools and a-man wno calls himself Mr. S80 & So, lately with the Germania lead works or Pueblo lead works, etc. etc. He may have been night watchman or grinding samples and sweeping floors in the retort rooms, but it gives him. achance to call him- self an assayer, recently employed by so-and-g0.. © Any man who has taken a course un- der a competant instructor can always show a certificate. Inever saw a man who wanted to hide his certificate or diploma if he were noc ashamed of it. ‘This is the cause of such a great diff- erence in assay iene and i is the cause of men ‘1 sooften. Itis zi ve hoped that legisla- ture will remedy thia evil in the near future, by passing laws similar to those lating the practice of HOW SMELTERS BUY ORE. A popular error seems to have gained currency throughout the mining world, both on the Eastern and Western hem- usphere, in regard to what is known ag amelter returns from a shipment of ore. Most people seem to think that the smelter manager dumps the car load of ae into the hopper-and runs it through the emulter just as the country miller lors with the farmers grizt of ‘wheat or vorn, and that when
