COURSES OFFERED English Literature 111A An introduction to the modern short story: its development as a conscious work of art: its form and technique. An introduction to the modern novel: its development, form and technique. At least three representative novels will be studied in depth. Outside reading will be required. (3-0-1-3) English Literature 111B An introduction to modern drama: its development in Greece, Elizabethan England and the Eighteenth Century: its contemporary form and technique. An introduction to contemporary poetry: its development, form and technique. (3-0-1-3) English 112A — COMPOSITION An intensive study of usage, sentence structure, paragraph structure and essay form. Students will be required to write extensively — themes will be marked rigorously, discussed with individuals in tutorial sessions, and revision will be required. This course is compulsory for transfer students until a satisfactory standard of written work has been reached. (0-0-2-2) English 112B — COMPOSITION A study of the elements of style, criticism and logical thinking will be made through the discussion of examples of various styles and standards of writing. Essays will be read and discussed in class. The extensive writing and revising of themes will continue. (0-2-0-2) English 151A — COMPOSITION AND TECHNICAL WRITING The fundamentals of clear and concise writing. Usage, sentence structure — para- graph structure — essay form — will be taught, using as much as possible, a func- tional approach. Extensive writing of themes and reports will be required.
