Ed Conroy, MLA for Rossland-Trail, announced that the Lions Club would receive a $24,000 grant from the GO B.C. program. And the chairman of the the Lions’ Bus Steering Com- mittee, knows exactly what to do with the money. “Funding will be going towards the purchase of a bus for the Extended Care Unit of the hospital.” the Li- ons’ Hugh Wilson said. The custom-built bus will be wheelchair-accessi- ble, and will service the Castlegar and District Hos- pital’s Intermediate and Extended Care Wing. “This bus is going to give us alot more freedom as far as being able to get out and about in the community.” said the hospital’s recre- ation co-ordinator Wendy Reilly. “We .were really starting to feel the pinch in the transportation area.” The Lions Club has not yet raised all of the funds necessary to purchase the bus, but Wilson is ,opti- mistic. “We're hoping that either the bus that we’ve ordered ‘or a prototype of it will be here by for the Trade Fair on the 24th of April.” said Wilson, GO B.C. is a provincial government funding pro- gram which uses proceeds from lotteries to assist com- munity initiatives. The only real complaint expressed at the meeting was with the provincial gov- ernment. Speaker after speaker urged the government to hand down a final de- cision on the proposed deal prior to March 27. 4 “Many of our members are worried about their next mortgage payments,” In- ternational Woodworkers Union ‘of Cana- da speaker Klaus Offermann said. “They want to get on with their lives and to do that, they need to get back to work.” The Castlegar and District Develop- ment Board’s Harry Stan was one of sev- eral voices to echo Offermann’s plea. Stan said the quick sale and transfer of the Castlegar mill and TFL No. 23 will en- sure the area’s economic future for gener- . ations to come. “We have 280 employees that have been out of work since November,” Stan said. “It is imperative that we allow these people to get back to work as soon as pos- @ FORT sh. The MLA for Prince George South said he would recommend fast-tracking the transfer to Miller when the hearings are concluded. “If the feeling in the other communi- ties, as it is here in Castlegar, is that we just need to get on with this, I'll certain- ly be talking to the minister to see if there are ways that’ we can speed up the process,” Ramsey said following the meet- Furniture Wa @ QUESNEL | Alta. He saidthe government . has established March 6 as the deadline for written submissions. That will be fol- lowed by “two weeks of study by the com- mission.” “We'll probably be looking over a couple hundred pages of documents,” Ramsey said. “That all takes time.” Local IWA president Tony Ferreira doesn’t buy that. Ferreira said it is absurd to expect his membership to cross its fin- gers for six weeks, awaiting a decision. “There’s a lot at stake here,” Ferreira said. “There are a lot of people in this hall that are pretty concerned about what the decision will be. That decision will shape the destiny of Castlegar and we need it quickly. : “This hasn’t been an easy time to rep- resent 280 people for the past few months,” Ferreira said, “and it’s not going to be made any easier when the Minister of Forests takes until March 26 or 27 to fi- nally make his decision.” _® e Low Prices!
