Smyl works for rosters trigger 40-goal man; Jim Sandlak, the 20-year-old all-rookie selection of two years ago; and man-child Trevor Linden, the towering, superbly tal- ented rookie who may be the only 1988 first-round draft choice to play in the National Hockey League this season. Stan Smyl?Sure, he's still around. But after a decade in Vancouver, the stocky bulldog who has been the heart and soul of some mediocre Canuck teams, has suddenly become an afterthought. Except in his own mind. “I believe if I'm beating the player across from me, I'll be playing,” says the soft-spoken 30-year-old who has been the Canuck captain since the 1981-82 season. He admits there's a time to move aside from younger, stronger players “but I'm not ready to get gut of the way.” Spokane, Tri-City play here The Spokane Chiefs and the Tri-City Bruins (formerly the New Westminster Bruins) will play an exhibition hockey game this Friday CASTLE BOWL (Under New Management) There are openings for teams in the lowing bowling leagues: MORNING Wednesday, 9:30 a.m. AFTERNOON Tuesday, 1:00 p.m. EVENING Tuesday (Mixed), 9:00 p.m. Wednesday (Ladies), 7:00 p.m. Wednesday (Mixed), 9:00 p.m. Friday (Mixed), 9:00 p.m. There are also openings for individual bowlers in some leagues. Amateur ~Hockey Association (BCAHA) honored Castlegar’s Paul Phipps as B.C.'s Hockey Coach of The Year at its Annual Convention held at Harrison Hot Springs last weekend. Phipps was presented with the Labatts Ernie Gare Memorial Trophy by Mrs. Cathy Gare, wife of the late Ernie Gare. The convention and the banquet were attended -by over 400 people representing minor hockey from all over B.C. The Coach of the Year Award is the highest honor bestowed to a minor hockey coach by the BCAHA. It is awarded annually to the coach who best contributes to child development through fair play, fun, friendship and hockey development. Winning records are not necessarily a criteria. The nominations are judged on the basis of the coaches’ attitude towards children in compliance with the minor hockey associations’ philosophy. Phipps is the newly-appointed principal of Twin Rivers elementary school. He also served as Principal for Tarrys elementary school and, prior to his present appointment, was the Principal of Kin- naird elementary school. Phipps has coached Castlegar Minor Hockey teams for nine years. He worked with teams from Novice up to and including Bantam level, both with house league and Rep teams. He also served for one year as Bantam division manager. Last year, when there were only 16 players registered in the Pee Wee division, he took them all into ‘the Rep team, regardless of the players’ skills and abilities. Phipps developed the players into a contending Pee Wee Rep team last season and took the squad all the way to the Provincials. named team. The team won the West Kootenay champion- ship and went on to the Provincial final. They came in second, losing the only game to Kimberley. Throughout the season the players demonstrated good sportsmanship and also had fun playing the game of hockey. John Loo, President of the Castlegar and Dis- triet Minor Hockey Association, commented: “We are proud to have a coach with Paul Phipps’ attitude, skill and dedication who shares our association's philosophy, which is to help the players to learn hockey skills and have fun; but most important of all, to develop good spor hip in our The executive, players and parents are very proud that one of our many excellent coaches has won the Coach of the Year Award.” TheErnieGare Memorial Trophy will be displayed at the Community Complex. In his acceptance speech, Phipps thanked the BCAHA executive and his father, Art, who has worked for Nanaimo Minor Hockey for over 25 years. He also tanked the local hockey association. “The Castlegar Minor Hockey Association has given me the opportunity of working with some fine people. I worked with a dedicated executive, under the capable leadership of John Loo. I worked with many helpful coaches, supportive parents, and enthusiastic players. And I am pleased to accept the award on behalf of all those associated with the Castlegar and District Minor Hockey Association.” Leo Atwell, who coached Paul Phipps in his youth, was also at the presentation. ited cays “— 4 -— { Thursday, September 22 through to Wednesday, September 28 fr ar News “i ar Supplement to the Castlegar News of Wednesday, September 21, 1988.
