We're all out running in the park. those who hove lost con tell jegor _26/78 By MIKE FUHRMANN The Canadian Press In the world of computers, bigger is usually better but not always, say users of the hottest-selling and most powerful new programs for businesses. Instead of buying separate programs for jobs like word processing, spreadsheet work (a form of financial planning) and information storage, many computer owners are buying one whopping program that does all three functions. The so-called integrated program also has the virtue of letting you move information from one application to another For example, a table of sales figures calculated in the spreadsheet can be inserted into a report created by the word processor By far the most successful of these programs has been 1-2-3, by Lotus Development Corp., which combines spread. sheet, database and graphics functions. Now a new crop of even larger integrated programs has arrived. Lotus's Symphony adds word processing and communications to the other three applications, and Frame- work by Ashton-Tate Inc. also offers five functions. TOO MUCH HYPE? But some observers says there's too much hype surrounding integrated software and that computer users are often better off buying separate programs. “In most cases, the idea of integrated software is greatly oversold,” says Anthony Lewin, a manager at Toronto dealer Computer Connections. By cramming several applications into one massive meeting on Monday. He has lived in Saanich for 25 years following a 22-year career with the federal gov- ernment. Keenleyside served seven years as chairman of B.C. Hydro and associate commis- sioner-general for the United Nations conference on human settlements in Vancouver. Gadgets alll the rage CALGARY (CP) — Alber- tans are ahead of other Can- adians when it comes to zap- ping their food in microwave ovens and loading dirty plates into dishwashers, housing analyst Ed Strap- agiel says. Statistics Canada figures also show that Albertans outperform the rest of the country on a per capita basis in owning videocassette re- corders and home freezers, subscribing. to pay-TV ser. vices and installing second bathrooms in their homes. Strapagiel said the statis ties should be clear guide- lines to architects preparing future housing designs. For example, he said, with 83 per cent of all Alberta holds owning a micro- program, some of the power of the individual is often sacrificed Someone needing to do heavy word processing, for example, “would be very disappointed with Symphony,” Lewis says. Considering that Symphony retails for about $950, the cost of that disappointment is substantial. Sophisticated programs that do nothing but word ing, such as WordStar or cost about $650 and usually offer more features and the ability to handle larger documents than a integrated program would. ADD COMPO! “Most of the real strength of integrated programs is in their spreadsheet, and they've added the other compon ents,” says Robert Payne, research director at me (Canada) Ltd. = Separate spreadsheet programs such as the once popular VisiCale have been all but eclipsed by integrated programs, which allow the user to display calculations in the form of graphs. However, “if you're really into graphics in a big way, forget about Lotus,” Payne says. A graphics program called KeyChart ($495) by SoftKey Software Products Inc. of Toronto is used by banks and oil companies and far outper forms the capabilities of Lotus software, he says. Chuck McCurdy eae of software distributor Cc e, says Sy lities are but the program is too complex. * tt takes a long time to learn the whole thing.” He calls Symphony “a 90-per-cent solution” because of shortcomings in some of its individual applications HAS MORE POWER Users who need a full-fledged database should go to a separate program like dBase 3 ($950), “which is immensely more powerful than what you'd get in an integrated package. “On the other hand, people with simpler needs might be best served by a less expensive database program The state of the art in integrated software, some Lisa computer. The package contains seven applications that with no loss of power,” support specialist at Apple Canada. Moving from one application to another is achieved by a pointing device called a mouse, which many users find easier than the keyboard commands required by other integrated programs Dieting makes you fatter TORONTO (CP) to lose weight? Gifted have needs MOOSE JAW, SASK. (CP) The educational system has to change to meet the needs of gifted children, says Lynn Saas, a consultant with the Saskatchewan education department “We've got to keep lobby ing until changes are made,” Saas told a public meeting held to determine whether there is enough interest in Moose Jaw to form a parents’ group for gifted education. He's just finished sailing Canada's second largest ice- FS a the John A. Macdonald, home from 4 months of battling the Arctic pack and he found more ice there this year than he's ever seen. The stout, dark-haired mariner has been guiding Canadian Coast Guard icebreakers north every summer since 1970 to break paths for commercial ships in the eastern Aretie before winter ice shuts down navigation altogether. ‘The abundance of ice could be bad news next spring for fishermen, oil rig operators and shippers off Newfoundland, where the southernmost chunks of the ice pack drift every before melting in the warmer southern waters. The ice has been particularly bad off Newfoundland for the last two years, forcing oil rigs to move off their sites several times and isolating communities such as Fogo Island for long stretches. Armored by a steel skin as thick as a brick wall, an ice- breaker is difficult to damage. But multi-year ice, the rock-hard kind that mariners hate, was everywhere this year in chunks six to 10 metres thick and up to 30 metres ‘across. It gave the Macdonald a pounding She didn't exactly limp home, but she will be in drydock for a few weeks for repairs. A propeller broke when a slab of multi-year ice slid under the hull midway through the voyage. She has two other props so the loss didn't stop her, but it did slow her down, stealing about 2,000 horsepower from her 15,000-horsepower potential. DAMAGED HULL The constant pounding into multi-year ice also damaged the hull slightly “Ramming a piece of ice like that is like hitting against a steel wall,” Gomes said. “Although the ship is built that way, she is also 24 years old “This is my 15th trip in the Arctic, and I've never seen conditions so bad It was a real tough trip.” On a normal voyage, Macdonald's helicopter flies ahead to spot the ice pack about once a week. This year, it had to fly reconnaissance practically every day Gomes puts little credence in the latest scientific theory that a greenhouse effect may be causing the ice cap to je. “[ve also heard other scientists mention the opposite direction — that we may have another ice age But I couldn't see any difference. Every year in the Arctic is different. You never see two years alike.” A possible clue into this year's unusual abundance of ice lies in far nothern strait between Canada and Greenland. “There is a natural ice bridge that forms between Canada and Greenland in the later part of the year and it stops the ice from coming down. But there was no bridge Answer to Sunday Crossword Puzzle No. 134. Answer to Sunday, Dec. 9, Cryptoquip. THE UNFULFILLED C! RAP SHOOTE! Ken Smith Soltys Gomes is thankful there were no gales from the cast, which would have built pressure by pushing against the natural drift of the ice. As it was, Macdonald got stuck once. Aretic, the northern supply ship she was accompanying, had a 12-hour engine breakdown. It was so cold that the ice ridges created as the two ships cleared a path through the ice quickly froze into a solid wall. In such situations, ships can do little but wait for the ice pressure to ease, meanwhile taking care to keep the ice away from their vulnerable rudders. Canada's icebreakers are old, but Gomes feels they are second to none in the world. They have to be, because Canada's Arctic ice is the world's worst, except perhaps for the Antarctic. A photo of the Soviet nuclear icebreaker Lenin hangs above the captain's desk, but he says Soviet technology is not necessarily better than Canada's.
