George Cady says Westar is leaving the land, which reverts to the Crown after the company harvests the timber, in a “mess.” “Normally, when anybody else goes logging on Crown land, they file a logging plan and follow certain rules, such as not cutting immature trees and leaving slash all over the place,” Cady said in a telephone interview. But because of the leasing arrange- ments with Westar, Cady said the Ministry of Forests has no say on what the company does on that land. “They can cut what they want,” he said. “There are immature trees in that area,” Cady added, and he accused "Westar of logging “where it knows it wasn't supposed to log for 10 years.” Cady also said Westar is leaving ‘|. slash (the debris such as bark, small branches and shavings left over from logging) ‘‘all over the countryside.” He College gets $100,000 fo programs By RON NORMAN Edito Selkirk College as received a $100,000 economic development: grant from the provincial government The grant will be used to catabliah two new courses at the college: one to train small business managers, and the other to train employees in the hospitality industry. ‘The grant was one of 14 announced by Education Minister Jack Heinrich as part of the second round of grants from the province's Local Economic Renewal —and-Development-Fund.— The 14 grants in the second phase total $1.7 million. Earlier the college received a $50,000 grant to set up a course on computer applications in resource management. So far, the province has allocated $3.9 million in grants from a budget of $5.8 million. The remainder of ‘the funding is expected to be allocated this fall. The college has submitted a total of 11 proposals for funding. The hospitality, courses will be He that the public must pay for the clean-up of the land when it cused Westar Timber of “hit and run” reverts to the Crown. “You and I as taxpayers through the Ministry of Forests have to pay to clean it up,” he said. Proper logging practices, Cady said, require companies to gather all the slash’ in one area and burn it in the autumn when the fire hazard is not as extreme. But Jim Cross, general manager of Westar’s Southern Wood Products, said “that’s exactly what we do.” In a telephone interview, Cross an- grily refuted Cady’s accusations. “It's our firm belief that our pra- ctice is the same as everybody's else's,” he said, referring to the Lardeau area. “As far as I'm concerned, Cady is just trying to embarrass Westar.” Cross denied Westar is leaving slash on the sites, saying the company has “a “They may have one somewhere but they’re not using him in this area,” Cady said. Cross, however, dismissed Cady’s claim. “We've got five professional for- - esters on the payroll and we use the one in Nakusp up there (in the Lardeau area).” Cross also said Cady's accusation that Westar is logging immature trees is unfounded because the company has no use for trees under a certain diameter in size. What Westar is doing, Cross ex- plained, is “harvesting small wood stands of fir that are sientt to 16 inches in diameter,” John Sedlack, forest service district manager at the Kootenay Lake office, said areas are “logged differently in good and bad times” and that Westar is “not necessarily harvesting immature trees.” Sedlack explained that pine trees, slash burning requi on three sites totalling 18 hectares.” He explained that all property in B.C., including private property, is covered by section 114 of the B.C. Forest Act which requires “slash abatement” to prevent fire hazards. Cross said Westar's agreement with the forest service requires the com- pany to burn slash in the Lardeau area _ in October, which he said the company has'every intention of doing. Cady also accused Westar of not for le, are usually logged when they are 100 years old, but said there is a leeway of 20 years on either side of that age when the trees may be har- vested. Cady's accusations came as no sur- prise to Cross, who said Cady had phoned him in early June about the Lardeau lands. Cross said he made efforts to arrange to go to the sites in question with Cady to examine the logging ices taking place. using a regi: d pi forester to tell the “the une 5 and 25 we made way to log” in the Lardeau area and advise the company of bad logging practices.
