Parent council busy Stanley Humphries secondary school has had a busy and exciting month. On Feb. 26, the Parent Advisory Council had Sally Williams describe how parents can assist their children in writing school reports. She ex- plained how a topic was selected. Asking ‘‘What, when, where, why and who," helps ideas to start flowing, Williams said. All parent advisory councils par- ticipated in a workshop held March 1 at the Ootischenia school. The new intermediate program was the issue. Learning styles such as self- expression, hands-on learning, thinking skills and cooperative lear- ning ideas were explored. There were representatives from Trail, Rossland, Nelson, Salmo, Grand Forks and Castlegar. The Castlegar Rar yeew of the B.C. had a display with ii Free parenting course offered Nobody’s perfect, but parents can knock themselves out trying to be — and then feel guilty when they aren't. So it seemed a healthy title for a national parenting course, giving the idea of doing the best parents can without thinking they have to do everything exactly right. In Castlegar, the course is offered free of charge through Castlegar Community Services by facilitators Marilyn Gauthier and Carel Scott. Both facilitators say an important feature of the course is that it’s open and parts of the course content can ‘ipants themselves. do have some preset of course,” explained Gauthier, ‘but it’s very important that the participants get’ the special information they need and the chan- ce to set some of the . The course material is designed to be easily understood. The five core books provided for the parents’ use contain lots of visual instruction, and remain theirs for future reference. “The beauty of the program is that there is no cost, and it’s designed to assist the participants about learning disabilities.
