The first runner covers two kilometres, hands off to the canoeists who paddle about 400 metres in the Kootenay River. They then hand off to the second two-kilometre runner. The sprinter then covers 450 mewes, up a steep hill and across a field. The team cyclist then rides five kilometres. When the cyclist returns, the entire team meets at the 12-foot Plywood wall and storms it together. Herb Hammond, author of Seeing the Forest Among the Trees, is an independent forester in B.C. who has worked closely with Native communities and the Slocan Valley Watershed Alliance and will be one of the Principal speakers. With him will be Tom Power, professor of Economics at the University of Montana and author of The Economic Pursuit of Quality. Mr. Hammond will talk about how we as communi- ties can make a better living from forest protection than from forest extracation There will also be facilitated discussion groups whose topics include sustainable forestry, transition strategies and eco- nomic models for industry- based communities, Columbia River pollution and building concensus. On Saturday evening there will be a concert presented by Daystar and Bo Conlan called ‘For Love of Water’.
