SEE ‘The audience doesn't get a chance to get bored’ — GLENN ERICKSON Organizer and competitor NOVICE UNDERHAND: STORY ANd PHOTOS BY BRENOAN HALPER ANd There's nothing quite like the sweet smell of fresh-cut pine and two-stroke oil. It filled the air Saturday at the 12th Annual Slo- can City Logging Show. Organizer, and competitor, Glenn Erickson said that the Loggers’ festival was a success this year. “There was a little better level of competition this year than is standard.” The show started in 1980, and has really taken off since the show grounds were built four a years later. He said the event draws a solid quality of competitors and a Jot of community support. With 21 events, lightning fast action, and non-stop movement from event to event, Erickson said the day was a real crowd pleaser. “The audience doesn't get a chance to get bored.” For Erickson, the event is three weeks of preparation and one day of heavy competition. He has won the overall title six times in the past. To organize the show, he gets the wood out of the bush, felling, 17.76 17.92 18.02 1:14.74 1:17.16 1:17.66 1:20.28 Julie McKay & Kari Bischoff WOMEN’S DOT SPLIT: Cowley OPEN OBSTACLE POLE: JASON KEENAN Ed Braun Brad Laughlin bucking, and hayling it himself. Pretty good practice. He also orga- nized the prizes and sponsors. “Trying to organize and com- pete takes a lot out of you.” In terms of class, events ranged from novice class (which means the contestant has not won first place in a particular event), all the way up to Canadian anc world championship competition. Jack Brown-John, of Williams Lake, won the Canadian Cham- pionship in single buck, cutting through the 25-inch log in 40.2 seconds. Though he works in the logging and silviculture busi- ness, he said he does not get the Opportunity to train on the job. “I train a couple of hours every week,” said Brown-John. There is another reason. “This is my twentieth year doing it. He was prepared for the larger logs used at the Slocan event “T train for a little bigger log. I pushed heavier and a little slow- er with heavier strokes.” Charlene Bjerg came in fourth in the Novice Double Buck along with partner Frank Pasowisty.
