Syndicated Columnist Dear Ann Landers: This is a very painful letter for me to write but I need to get this off my chest My mother passed away last December after a long illness. She had asked to be cremated. We con tacted a funeral home and were told, “We'll handle everything Don't worry about a thing.” They said they would deliver my mother's remains to us within a week Well, they did exactly that. The funeral home messenger arrived at my front door at the appointed time with my mother's remains in a CARDBOARD BOX. On top of th box was a label which said, “T Remains of ‘Ann Smith' — Tempo- rary Container.” Needless to say, I was totally shocked, as was my sister, who was visiting me at the time. After a few moments of stunned disbelief, my sister contacted the funeral home and asked why in the world they did this incredibly cruel and thoughtles: thing. She was told, “If you are interested, you can purchase an um from us for your mother’s remains.” I hope no one else ever has to go through such a horrible experience. We found out the hard way that because it's difficult to think straight at a time of great sorrow, it's a good idea to have someone who is not emotionally involved take charge of the arrangements. I certainly wish we had. — Still Upset in Girard, Ohio. Dear Ohio: The insensitivity of the funeral director is beyond belief. To send the remains of a loved one in a cardboard box and suggest that you might purchase an urn is incredibly callous. Girard, Ohio, is not a very large town. When this letter appears in print, there's going to be quite a lot of conversation. I believe the facts are as you stated them. If there's more to the story, I'd like to hear about it My condolences to you and your family on the loss of your mother Ra TBO WE ALITRS >> We now have many B floral and spice scented S olls for popouril 38 and bath salts.
