From the number of candidates in the field, there can be but little donbt that good men will be select- ed. The undesirable candidates’ chances of being elected is generally reduced by cutting down the num- ber to six. Good bye, C. O’Brien It is not necessary to waste any more space on him. TUESDAY MARCH 23, 1897. STOCK EXCHANGE. If the stoek brokers and promot- which was supplemented by private i 1 ers who are d to Rosslaud The P too Small for the Business. The kick made by the Recorp having a stock exchange, on ac- count of the danger of this value of treasury stock being injured by it, would stop to consider that all such evil effects will come through the operations of the Spokane ‘ex- change, they might pause. At pre- ~ sent all the injuries in this way are experienced while thé local brokers have no opportunity of protecting their stock like they would have if there was an exchange here. There are some valid objections to estab- lishing an exchange here; but there are many more reasons why it should be done. To be sure there are companies which have al- lowed the promoters stock to get into hands, which either cannot af- ford.to hoid it or for some other reason do not wish to. But after all if placed on the exch it’will Pp vo the g at Ottawa has at last produced some result in regard to the irregularities of the Rossland postoffice. E.-H. Fletcher, chief infpector of the prov- ince, is now in Rossland inquiring into the matter and preparing a re- port for headquarters. Mr. Fletcher is of the opinion that the present post- office building is not sufficiently large for the volume of business transacted. He also thinks that the office is under- manned, and will d that Vote for ROBT. SCOTT The Peoples’ Candidate . . Committee Rooms : WASHINGTON STREET Adv. additional clerical assistance be pro- vided by the department. Mr. Fletcher on behalf of his de- partment is most anxious to make the Rossland postal service as efficient as possible and will make some desirable suggestions towards that end. , . With the incorporation of Rossland it seems desirable that there should. be a delivery of mail by letter-carriers within the city limits, and while ‘the do but little more injury than -float- ing on the local market. Itis not right to have Spokane or any other place fix the values of our stocks, and alecal exchange is the only thing that will prevent it. THE PARIS BELLE CASE. There can be but Jittle doubt|- that the sipreme court of the pro- vince has purposed its decision in the Paris Belle case, and that it sustained the appeal of that com- pany against the railroad company. The full force and effect of the de- cision cannot’ be known until it is made public, but it is certain that Dan Corbin has run against a snag and that some people*have been foolish enough to pay him money P 4 Lis ing Mr. Fletcher’s report it would be well for Rossland citizens to memorialize him to.that effect. ae eS F. W. BAUER BETURNS. Says Vancouver People Are Deeply Interested in Mining. — F. W. Bauer, of the firm of Bauer & Parker, has returned from Vaycou-: ver, where he has been the greater part of. the winter telling the good Vancouver people what 4 great place Rossland is. While there he placed considerable mining .stock and eays the Vancouverites are in the swim of the mining eacitement. Mr. Bauer was‘ surprised at the growth of the city during his absence. He will re- main permanently. a for land on the Paris Belle ground will wish they had taken the Re- cord’s advice. It was probably some hobo who offered Fitzsimmons $750.000 to throw the fight. Ifhe will cut off two ciphers, somebody might be- lieve him and give him credit for ” refusing it, as there would be more in it to win. Af Rossland has a Stock Ex- change it will give local brokers and promoters an opportunity to protect their treasury stocks. Prices here are better than in Spo- kane and will still further be en- hanced with a properly ducted GOLDEN BAR MEETING. Mining Company Confirms Election of Officers. Politicians are estimating the vote to be cast any- where between 700 and 1,000. There is no time to lose if all are to have an opportunity to register. —E} Last Thursday Mr Kellie, M.P.P. in the legislature at Victoria, ask- ed leave to introduce a bill entitled “ An Act to repeal the Nelson and Fort Sheppard Railway subsidy Act, 1892." As Mr Iisilis is per- fectly familiar with all the details and condition of this act and the interpretations Corbin has placed upon it, it is not at all improbable that his bill will succeed. If Mr Kellie can secure the concelation of the Nelson and Fort Sheppard land grant the people of West Koetenay will rise up and call him blessed. —_ That the letters patent should provide for six aldermen instead of nine, was a great surprise to the committee which had the incorpor- ation of Rossland in charge, as well as to everybody else. After all six three men. George Siler, number of others returning from Carson were on board the passenger train. All were shaken up but none injured. ——. SHARKEY AND MAHER. Pugilists.
