Page 8B The Castlegar Sun ‘ Wednesday, July 5, 1995 “STRAIGHT TALK FROM GARY MALONEY Need a little cash for college? Fi ial aid rkshop: SERVICE STATION VS. DEALER REPAIRS All good things come to an end ~ like honeymoons and warranties. In their hour of need, car owners often wrestle with the question of “Who can I turn to for repair work?” Here are a few things to consider while weighing the altematives: 1.) Nobody knows your car better than the dealership you bought it from They're trained to be on top of today’s rapidly changing automobile ‘technology, particularly for the models they sell — the model you drive Their quality contro! standards assure you of getting the part designed to best in your vehicle. And their guarantees, estimates and repairs are all documented in writing. 2.) Some service station recommendations turn out to be bum steers. if a friend tells you that a garage does “good work” based on his experience there two years ago when he had his muffler fixed, it may not hold true today when you go in for a valve job. For one thing, there may be a whole new crew of mechanics on hand. For another, maybe mufflers, not valves, are their speciality. Always evaluate a recommendation for its recentness and relevance to your situation. 3.) Convenience is great in combination with competence and candor. But finding a service station that's nearby, top-notch, and true-to- their-word is easier said than done. Some bad omens: If they don’t guarantee their work in writing, refuse to give written estimates in advance, and are gruff or evasive about your questions, chances are you're going to pay a high price for convenience. When in doubt, your best bet for repairs is to retrace your steps back — back home to your dealership. I work 40 hours a week, keep an immaculate house, take care of two chil- dren and a husband, and find time for visits to a gym to work out. I am the only woman on my block who cuts the grass, washes the car, cleans out the garage, paints the house and knows how to dismantle an above- ground swimming pool. When I am doing dirty work around the house, I admit that I look like a mess, but not many people wear an evening gown to wash the car, At work, I wear nice outfits, makeup, jewelry and heels. I can adapt to any sit- uation from digging a holejin the backyard to attending a formal party. Not all overweight people are sitting in front of the television feeling sorry for themselves and stuffing their face with food. We are vital members of the community who just happen to have some extra weight. - “Fed” Up in Louisiana. Dear Fed: Thanks for giving Fran a_well- deserved clop in the chops He needed it.
