B8 CASTLEGAR NEWS, November 19, 1980. _ As it- happens Visitors always welcome By BARBARA BULLARD The last time I went to Winlaw -School, four girls showed me a clever skit for the next sharing period. It started a pompous wise man who always manages a one- up on the crowds that, for some reason, keep gathering to hear his empty messages. They liked the cocky humor. Now'I begin to feel part of the school. These girls, like a welcoming committee, just ‘spilled out their plans, At first, it was only teachers who told me the news. Kids would smile shyly. Even though school is open to visitors anytime, Friday af- ternoon sharing is the time to view a concoction of their best efforts. It makes every- one feel like his work is a little. more important when someone extraordinary shows up unannounced to see and appreciate. That's at 1:30. Spatter-paint ‘leaf prints and wild things are posted in kindergarten. Two good guys and two good gals are noted for such activities as story entry in the district-wide contest. One depicted a tan half buried in a golden wheat field. One is a plea to stop wars, to have loving kind- ness, A chorus of angels ap- plauds earthly peace. One iNustrates a recycling ma- chine for weapons. Another, a mother’s sorrow is losing a son at war. It was their sensitivity and good sense that impressed me. Good show! The Health Hustle is a fitness program for all ages together in the gym. The ex- ercises are designed for loos- ening and shaping up all parts of the body, especially those areas of the spine where tension is famous for settling. There will be eight routines for variation. The next one coming can be put to Christmas music, in season. Canada has replaced the U.S.A. in being least physi- cally fit. We're out to change that. It is certainly important for children to have good hearts for a good life. A dozen moms came, some in costume, to view the writing, good oral reading and using great des- eribing words. Global Disarmament posters were wrapped for parade. Four jud- ges were asked to select the scariest, funniest and most original. I'll have to confess, though, it made the judges feel sad to select. Says cinemas are: no longer useful TORONTO (CP) — Les- lie Halliwell is a film historian who fears he may become a film archeologist. “It's almost fair to say that cinema has outlived its usefulness,” he said Monday. “At one time, people with little money and uncomfor- table homes went to comfor- table movie houses for spir- itual uplift. “Nowadays, the reverse is true. People’s homes are comfortable but people go to uncomfortable cinemas and emerge depressed.”" The author of The Film- goer’s Companion, The Film- goer's Book of Quotes and Halliwell’s Film Guide, often express scorn for ambitious, “non-entertaining" films and for the critics who profess to find meaning therein. He does not quite say .that movies were destroyed when they began to talk, but . he does nay color was mostly a mistal COLOR IS REALISTIC “Color can, only be re- alistic, which is fine if you want realism,” he said. “Black and white is ‘to color as poetry is to prose; all Hitchcock's best films, for example, were in black and white, z His assessment of the Canadian film industry — as a buyer for Britain's ITV network he sees a fair amount of Canada’s output — is similarly critical.
