Members of the Free- domite faction represented a fair share of the audience, providing a backdrop to speak- er N. Nevokshonoff, who stood a barrage of questions relating to the part of his account delivered at the preceding session. Nevokshonoff, an elder from Krestova, denied respon- sibility for expounding Doukho- bor ideologies at the meeting. He said he only wished to state facts relating to events as he knew them. id they were inter- ested in establishing a base from which a possible conclu- sion could be reached as to whether the Freedomite move- ment was a itis on declined to enter further into this field, Verigin said. he con- sidered it his obligation, as principal representative of the Doukhobor organization, to ex- pound on the matter. Nevokshonoff attempted to add that others, besides Freedomites were involved in destruction of Doukhobor prop- erty, beginning with confisca- tion of lands in Saskatchewan and members tortured to death’ in jails with the list finally according to Doukhobor teach- ings, or whether it was a “delusionary concept”. Nevokshonoff was asked why Freedomites living on com- munal property refused to pay their dues, why they resisted relocation to a communal dis- trict offered them for free by the community, why they al- ways contended “against one thing and another" and wheth- er it was considered ethically right on their part to create artificial causes for contention. The ideological differences between the radical and ortho- dox forces was at a high pitch during the greater part of the meeting, but the two chairmen, W. Chernoff and W. Lebedoff were well able to keep things under control, The next session is sched- uled for March 5 at the same location where the same theme will be inued. Fer Floreiice Private funeral services were held Friday from the Chapel of the Castlegar Funeral Home for Florence Maitland, a former resident of Castlegar and latterly a. resident of Jubilee Manor in Nelson. Mrs. Maitland, 86, died Tuesday of last week at Koote- nay Lake District Hospital. She was born Feb. 27, 1891 in Sussex, England and came to Canada in 1920 to settle in The honorary chai countered with the accusation that Freedomites, in essence, were acting contrary to the Doukhobor faith and in direct opposition to the example of Peter Chistiakoff who, upon arrival in Canada, proclaimed full forgiveness to those who killed his father. The USCC head considered all people subscribing to ideas based on past grievances as erroneous, out of place and out of date and said people “should stop living in the past, refusing to follow Cain's example . . . cleanse the slate with complete forgiveness and unite into one body as a true spiritual con- gregation under the banner of Toil and Peaceful Life.” Inspired by his appeal was a spontaneous choral rendition of the Lord's Prayer by all present. Verigin refuted allegations of having political affiliations with foreign ideologies, levelled at him by the opposing group. He announced the current cam- paign of his USCC committee to promote unity amongst all part of which con- sisted of a committee visit to each district. To an objection from a Freedomite that forgiveness of enemies, for instance those who killed Lordly—was akin to affiliation with them, Verigin hotly denied that forgiveness had anything to do with affilia- tion. He stated that if Freedo- mites were true to their calling they would never do the things they did.
