The drug acyclovir was found effective in fighting cytomegalovirus, or CMV, in several transplant patients tested over ‘14 months at University Hospitals, Dr. Henry Balfour said. “We're very encouraged by our results,” Balfour said, adding that an intravenous form of the drug could be available to physicans by early next year. Balfour, director of the University Hospitals clinical virology division, said CMV is the most common disease to strike kidney transplant patients in the first six months after surgery. “It’s a greater risk than (organ) rejection,” he said. The body sometimes rallies Dies beneath financial centre NEW YORK (AP) — The derelict was a familiar figure to some who worked on Wall Street. Each morning at 5:30, he pushed up a metal side; walk grating near the New York Stork Exchange and left his subterranean home for a day of wandering the city's streets. Then about five months ago he vanished. Construc- tion workers found him Sept. 12, entombed four metres beneath the U.S.. financial centre amid bits of clothing and costume jewelry in the two-room rat-infested hole where he lived. The skeletal remains of the man, believed to be in his mid-50s, were found while the workers were surveying for a new highrise office building, police said. He was lying face-up on a ripped and soiled clothed in door was a metre-square metal grating. Its stairway was a rusted ladder leading down into the putrid-smelling, rubble- strewn chamber, which ahd a broken toilet, a collapsible luggage cart and empty soft drink cans strewn about. A dirty, lightweight orange jacket had been hung up. Edward Gardner, a guard at a bank across the street at 63 Wall St., told police that for more than a year a man would leave the hole prompt- ly each day at 5:30 a.m. and return at 10 p.m., apparently after wandering the city streets. “He was always alone,” Disken said Gardner told police. Five months ago the man stopped. making his regular _ shabby winter garb, includ- ing two heavy jackets, work pants and boots. “Yeah, it was dirty and had all kind of creatures running around, but to him, whoever he was, it was someplace to stay warm — it was his home,” said Det. Sgt. Donald Disken of the 1st Precinct. The man's home was about four metres long. Its front Police speculated the man died of natural causes but said an autopsy, expected to be completed by the end of the week, would determine the exact cause of death. The man had no identi- fication on him. The only other items found inside the underground chamber were the few pieces of costume jewelry. / Wedding Betis _/ Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Frank Astofooroff, whose wedding took place Sept. 4 in Grand Forks. Now between 15 and 30 years old, they represent about a third of Canada’s population and the way they deal with their problems will bring profound change, Ket- tle said in an interview. He predicts that: — They'll change jobs four times in their lives, each change requiring two or three years of training; — They probably will have three marriages or live-in re- lationships during their life- times; — As a voting bloc, they will topple governments that don't reflect their attitudes; — As workers, they will be ‘more independent than gen- erations before them, often working on their own to provide services they want instead of punching a time clock. DEGREE UNCERTAIN Kettle says that while other parents were pushing their children toward higher education, promising that a university degree would mean a lifetime of satisfying employment, he told his not to be so sure. “We were the lucky gen- eration,” he says he told them. “You're the unlucky one.” Kettle, 53, a Toronto- based author, consultant and lecturer, says he realized his three children (now aged 19, 22 and 26) could not escape “These things - we share’ with love from The United Church of Canada @bocwv Sun., Sept. 20 1:30.- 2:30 p.m. FAITH stories of every -day United Church persons from New- foundland to Van- couver Island MUSIC: old and new YOUTH (their elders, too) struggling with issues of faith and society MEET our first women Moderator. He says the seven million baby boomers are unlike any other group raised in Can- ada: The first television gen- eration, the first drug gen- eration, the first emerging from broken homes, the first watched over by Dr. Spokc- influenced parents. But most important, he says, is that almost all have high school 5 ation to say that we're look- ing at a new kind of people.” By 1984, this generation will be 45 per cent of the electorate, “so in a dozen years it goes from nothing to a power bloc in the elec- torate, which is overwhelm- ing.” its to fight trans- planted organs. The virus attacks about 60 per cent of kidney transplant patients a year, and between 10 per cent to 20 per cent of those stricken die, Balfour said. Scientists believe CMV re- mains latent in the body until a patient's natural defence system has been suppressed by drugs used to prevent organ rejection, Balfour said. ig. PoWs claim - millions owed in back pay By Barbara Gunn VANCOUVER (CP) — The British government owes mil- lions of pounds in back pay to officers held in prison camps during the Second World War, says a former Royal Air Force flight lieutenant who spent five years confined in prisoner-of-war camps. Michael Roth, who now lives in Toronto, says the British government im- pounded one-third of his wages when he was a pris- oner-of-war and now owes him $6,500 in back pay and interest. He hopes a petition to the Queen, to be circulated at a convention of the National Prisoners-of-War Association of Canada in Victoria this week, will prompt the British government to reimburse the thousands of former pris- oners-of-war. , During the war, officer- prisoners were paid a portion of: their wages in German “camp currency,” in accor- dance with Article 23 of the Geneva Convention. The token money was used to purchase such items as food, razor blades and cigarettes. In exchange, the British Exchequer impounded one- third of the captured officers’ regular wages and these funds were to be turned over -But Roth said in a news release that “the majority of RAF and RCAF PoWs never received any pay from the Germans.” He said the in- tention of ‘the plan was to “give this deducted pay — (after the war) to the Ger- mans,in return for the pay they had issued to allied PoWs. This was never done.” Telephone 365-52 10 DUNWOODY & CO. And the British government admitted long ago that the estimated three to four million pounds involved: was simply ab- sorbed by the government in 1960-51. Roth says 600 Royal Can- adian Air Force prisoners-of- war “lost 98,500 pounds — today worth a million pounds — plus 36 years interest.” He said he and other officer- prisoners “consider them- selves two-time losers and are entitled to refunds with interest.” 4 Former British prisoners- of-war say they are entitled to six million pounds.
