It went on sale last Monday in the United States, where six million copies were made. “It's incredible,” said a spokesman for Gallup Poll, which compiles the official British record industry charts. “It looks like it could be the biggest selling record ever in Britain.” Mull of Kintyre by Paul McCartney's group Wings sold more than two million copies in Britain. Bob Geldof of the Boom- town Rats, who brought the superstars together after seeing pictures of Ethiopia's famine victims, said, “We “We seem to have caught theatmosphere of Christmas, and the people who have bought the record are as much a part of Band Aid as the band members them- selves.” Other Band Aid members included members of top gropus such as Status Quo, Spandau Ballet, U2, Wham, Bananarama, Kool and the Gang and solo stars such as Paul Young, Marilyn, Midge Ure of Ultravox and Phil the record, then handed 49 back to)the store for resale. Rocky Conti LOS ANGELES (AP) — Rocky, the Cinderella movie of 1977, made Sylvester Stallone a star, and it did all right for Bill Conti as well. Conti is a composer and musician, and his song, Gonny Fly Now, helped make Rocky a hit. Conti was taking a rare moment of relaxation at his sprawling Spanish-style house in the private Fremont Place district in mid-Los An geles. He got there by pro ducing an incredibly vast and varied body of work to be played by everything from a symphony orchestra to a one-man synthesizer band — himself. He has been nominated for Academy Awards for the songs Gonna Fly Now and For Your Eyes Only from the James Bond film. Last April, his score for The Right Stuff won him the Oscar. His cur. rent scores include The Kar. ate Kid and Mass Appeal, and his themes can be heard every week on Dynasty, Fal con Crest and Cagney and Lacey He currently is creating seores for three feature movies and in his spare time he'll knock off some Super bow! music. MUSIC TO THE EARS ... The Grades 7 and 8 Kinnaird Junior Secondary Schoo! band played to a packed and appreciative house at Stanley Humphries Secondary School : Tuesday night Deaf love to dance LOS ANGELES (AP) — Half of his dancers are deaf, but Israeli choreographer Moshe Efrati isn't baffled. He's inspired. “Music belongs to the hearing dancers,” said the exprssive Efrati, backstage at UCLA's Royce Hall. “The nonhearing dancers come with silence; they belong to the vibrations.” Efrati founded the 18 member Kol Demama dance company in 1978. Its name means sound and silence in Hebrew. The troupe recently concluded an American tour, including performances in Los Angeles, New York and Nashville. A combination of rhythmic vibrations and subtle visual cues allow the deaf dancers to hold their own in the much-praised Israeli modern dance company, which also has toured France, Belgium, West Germany, Finland and Mexico. Backstage, Efrati beats a wooden stick against the He runsa star school CHICAGO (AP) Ae. tresses Jennifer Beals of Flashdance and Darryl Han. nah of Splash both were launched by drama teacher Dan Reichel, who says he doesn’t believe in stars, even though he keeps turning them out “We're getting the repu tation of being a star school because of Darryl and Jen ney,” said Reichel, who has taught at the private Francis W. But we don’t try to produce stars here. What we try to do is give kids a total experience, make them secure in who they are.” Beals said the most im portant thing Reichel taught her “was how to listen to a scene and not be so centred on yourself. He stresses group work, which is the way to go.” floor, creating vibrations that help cue the nonhearing per- formers. The movement of hearing dancers provides additional reinforcement. The dancers with normal hearing have to accommo date a subtle signa! routine built into the choreography and specifically to cue the deaf dancers. It could be nudging or an extra foot stomp. Music is used in all num bers, but it is not conven tional scoring. The choreographer pion eered his techniques in work- ing with nonhearing dancers and has written a book whose Hebrew name medns Sound and Silence and. Dancing. He hopes to see it translated into English. LEARN QUICKLY He says the deaf tend to feel awkward when they are first asked to move rhythmi. cally, but learn quickly. “The minute you put them on the right line, they get it,” said Efrati. They bring a unique qual ity to their work, he said. “Movement is their only ex pressive way because they don't have the words “They have strong impul ses, strong physical bodies; when they see something, they focus more than us. There are almost no mistakes because they are focusing so much.” Efrati trains deaf dancers after selecting them for phy ‘sical form and a sense of rhythm. “I was curious to find a way our two worlds can be one,” said Efrati, who work. ed separately with is own deaf and hearing companies for several years before com. bining them. His work grows out of the troupe's unique composition. One dance, Textures, uses a recording of vocalisms by the deaf along with music by Israeli composer Ami Maay ani. “The voices in the music are the voices of the deaf,” Efrati said. “I choose the music to belong to the sub- ject.” Efrati hopes to help the nonhearing reach the larger world through their expres sive movements. “I want them to say things to the other world, the hear. ing world — not to close them off like a zoo,” he said Cable 10 TV Cable 10 TV Thursday, Dec. 20 6:00—Sign-on and program information. 6:03—Castlegar Library storytime 6:15—SHSS Report.
