(CP) — Hobbyist Dunjoo Advani has trouble understanding the world’s sudden, over- whelming interest in his latest hand-built model airplane. But publications as diverse as National Geographic Magazine and the Soviet Union's official newspaper Pravda have carried prophetic stories about the impli- cations of his minature aircraft. And scientists at the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration have said they'll be watching the plane’s maiden flight with keen interest, scheduled to take place soon over a field near Ottawa. Advani, 25, says he merely pieced together 1.5 kilo- grams of balsa wood into a craft that looks not unlike something out of a box from a hobby shop. The focus of the global interest, however, is not so much the plane's construction as its revolutionary power source — microwaves beamed up fronr the ground. Equipped with a large, round receiving antenna near its tail, the plane will generate electricity to power its lone propeller using microwave energy sent from a satellite dish on Earth. MAKES DEBUT If all goes well at a Department of Communications’ research centre near Ottawa, it will be the first flight of a prototype microwave-fueled plane. And if millions of dollars already invested at labora- tories across ‘North America are any indication, it will also be the dawn of a promising new age in flight. NASA, for example, has already begun preliminary studies on a high-flying, microwave craft that could stay RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — With a headset, a computer, a map of the United States and eight wall clocks set to different time zones around the world, Tim Ernst plugs into the high-technology bus- iness of organ matching. Ernst, an organ placement specialist, works in the nerve centre of the United Network for Organ Sharing, an agency whose mission is rapidly growing because of a U.8. congressional mandate. That number is expected to rise by Oct. 1, when all U.S. transplant organizations must join the network or lose medieare program funding. CREATE NETWORK In 1984, the -National Transplant Act stipulates the creation of a national com- puter transplant system. The network was awarded a $879,000 US federal contract in October to pull together the coGntry’s 110 organ-pro- curement agencies, 200-plus transplant centres and num- erous tissue-typing labs. Federal funding will in crease to $1.8 million in 1988 as the workload grows. The network must win the plants, said executive direc- tor Gene Pierce. A 24-hour, voice-activated computer handles any calls that staff members cannot get to, taking donor or re- cipient information, proces- sing it and running a match. For recipients with less than 12 hours to live, the network alerts all transplant centres within the area of the patient that there is a critical need for specific organs. DEPENDS ON NEED With more than 11,000 people anxiously waiting for organs across the United States, “the goal is that who- ever is the most in need will get the organ,” said Debra Hearington, the network's professional education co- ordinator. Organ recipients are awarded points based on how long the patient has been waiting for a match, the medical urgency of the kidneys y evening and this morning they called me because they couldn't use them in Houston, within their region,” he said. of the of agencies, track every donor and every organ it hears about and document the outcome of all trans- patient's condi the prox- imity to the donor and the compatibility between donor and recipient. The technology may also be used to drive robots on a proposed U.S. mission to Mars, where the oxygen-de prived atmosphere prevents the use of conventional, combustible fuels. The full-scale version of the Canadian plane would be eight times the size of the model and act as a multi-pur. pose transmission and monitoring station to replace ground-based radio and TV towers, scientific balloons, satellites and rockets. Radar equipment for maritime surveillance is also being considered. It would be more effective than a stationary trans- mission tower and more economical than a satellite, says Ronald Barrington, director-general of radar and communications technology at the department's labora. tory in Shirley's Bay, Ont., west of Ottawa. Barrington said a single plane would have the trans- mission range of between 16 and 20 times that of a normal FM radio station tower, or approximately the whole of southern Ontario. FLIES FLAG Emblazoned with a Canadian Flag, Advani's red-and. white test plane is based on rough geometric patterns sketched by a six-member team from University of Toronto. The microwave and electronic equipment was designed by the Department of Communications. Advani was called in on the program because of his graduate work in aerospace engineering at the University of Toronto, and his 12-year passion for de- signing, building and flying his own radio-controlled model airplanes. He belongs to the Kingston Radio-Control Modelers, a hobby ciub that regularly flies homemake models in a field north of nearby Odessa, Ont. “T've loved airplanes ever since I can remember,” he says. Research into the design of the plane, known as SHARP (for Stationary High-Altitude Relay Platform), has been conducted at the university's Institute for Aerospace Studies for the past five years. Advani entered the masters degree program in aerospace engineering in 1985 and is researching a thesis on the potential effects of ozone on the materials used in constructing the plane I found some very interesting results,” he said. “Ozone deteriorates the mechanical properties of every material we subjected to it" except balsa wood. If Ottawa continues to finance the program, a one-third scale prototype will be built, with the full-size version planned about four years from now.
