Hi Lois Boone salutes Mainland, Island firemen Professional and volun- teer fire fighters, who this year will raise more than half a million dollars to support the work of the British Columbia and Yukon region of the Muscular Dystrophy Association of Canada have received a special salute from Government Services Minister Lois Boone and the minister said. “They protect our lives and our property, often at great risk to them- selves, and they lend their personal support to many, many community endeavours. “Their dedication to sup- port the research projects and client service programs of the B.C. Terry Erskine of Saanich- ton on Vancouver Island, president of the British Columbia Professional Fire Fighters Association and the current national president of MDAC, and Don Grant of Surrey, past president of the Volunteer Fire Fighters’ Association of British Columbia, received special certificates of appreciation presented by the minister at aceremony at the legislative buildings. Boone said the certificates are a means to recognize outstanding community service. “Few groups of people are more deserving of our than the fire fighters,” the MDAC'’s regional director for British Columbia, said that during the last 22 years, fire fighters in the province have raised more than $5 million. Across Canada _ since 1954, fire fighters have raised a total of more than $25 million. Muscular dystrophy is a neuro-muscular disorder whose most common sympton is wasting and progressive weakness of the muscles which control body movement. Funds raised by the fire fighters and through an annual telethon and other activities go towards research directed at finding a cure and to services to people with neuro-muscular disorders.
