For a book that will fit into most coat pockets, it includes a great depth of informa. tion, More than 800 common trees, shrubs and flowers are included. Chess Lyons has provided concise line drawings for each species. The guide includes 446 color pho- tographs, 59 maps, figures, charts and keys. One of the most useful parts of the book is the wildflower photo guide. This guide is arranged by color and flower type which is tremendously helpful when you come across a plant you can not identify. Let's say you're hiking in a shady damp area and come across a long-stemmed, coarsely leafed, white flower that's 15-20 cm high with swept back petals. It's new. to you. You sim- ply flip to the wildflower guide and you'll have no trouble identifying it as a White Shootingstar Bill Merilees cut is teeth on the 1952 edi- tion of Trees, Shrubs And Flowers To Know In British Columbia And Washington. His intet- est in botany and the outdoors was heightened when he lived in Castlegar from 1968-1976, Bill was 4 founding member of the West Kootenay Naturalists’ Association and put together the Castlegar Outdoor Education Area that included the Mel De Anna Trail. In his spare time he taught at Selkirk College. Much of what Bill added to the book—it's at least 60 per cent larger than before—is a result of his “on the ground” experience in the West Kootenay. Bill Owes a great deal to George Whitehead, Bob Walton and other members of the West Kootenay Naturalists for their enthusiasm for nature. Much of his Castlegar experiences are part of Trees, Shrubs & Flowers To Know In British Columbia and Washington. SUN STAFF PHOTO / Karen Kerkhof Mild chest pains should not be ignored Virtually all heart attacks are due to the blockage of a coronary artery by a thrombus, the medical term for a clot in a blood vessel. The clot blocks the flow of blood to the portion of the heart's muscle that lies beyond. starving it of oxygen. The muscle soon dies. The dead area is a myocardial infarction. Myocardial infarcts kill a large number of people Most people know this, and try to prevent or delay coronary artery disease by stopping smoking. staying slim. exercising, avoiding fats and cholesterol in their dict, and attending to diseases such as diabetes and high blood pressure. Some need cholesterol-reducing drugs to reduce their risk All these are preventive measures. Sometimes they fail, or have not been used. What can be done after the clot begins to form or has developed? There is a short spell of time during which the clot or thrombus can be dissolved, a process call thrombolysis. There are two thrombolytic agents in common use. The (considerably) more expensive one works a bit faster but the results of both drugs are similar in terms of preventing death. We will consider them to be equal here More important than the drug chosen is the time it is given. Blood clots ‘organize’ or firm up within a few hours and can no longer be dis- solved. Ideally the injections should be started within the first four hours, certainly within the first six. Between six and 12 hours the bene- fit is somewhat questionable, although present guidelines advise pro- viding the drug to most of these patients. Few will benefit after 12 hours have passed. The drugs are safe enough, but obviously cannot be given if the patient has active bleeding anywhere, either internal or external. Previ- ous bleeding episodes such as a stroke, a bleeding stomach ulcer or bladder hemorrhage are relative contraindications, as is recent major surgery and a few other things. Doctors have stressed for years the importance of getting medical help early if chest pain strikes. Angina, the pain of coronary artery blockage, is an oppressive pressure under the breastbone which might also be felt in the arm (usually left) or the jaw. The victim is often anxious and may be perspiring. The pain may come and go a bit early on, but this is not a reason to delay. If there is any doubt call 911 or the ambulance. “Get to the emergency” was good advice when early treatment could help a damaged heart survive the onslaught of a heart attack. It is excellent advice now that timely intervention can often prevent the heart attack from occurring FREE BIOFEEDBACK SESSION Kootenai Innercare 604-368-8000 #7-1050 Eldorado St. (Mark your Calendar... ) Thursday, October 25 is Senior's Day at Pharmasave.
