Tra, B.C., Feb. 8.—(Special:)— ‘Trail now has a chartered bank, {t is a branch of the Bank of British W. Oliver, manager of the Rossland branch, came down this morning and opened up thei in- i in the buildi Heard & Westcott’s, on the Bowery. Mr. Oliver is only temporarily in charge, a permanont manager will soon be appointed The opening of the bank was s sur- prise to nearly every one here as no an- nouncement to that intent had been made. The officers of the bank, how- ever, had been considering the de- sirability of opening a branch here for somo time. Toesday lust the di- rectors in London started to establish the branch here and Mr. Oliver, the manager at Rossland, was notified by cable. The present location will probably be only temporary, as an offer to put up a building to be occupied by the bank is now under consideration. It is quite possible that the Bank of British Columbia will also establish a branch here. They have been con- sidering the matter for some time and are now awaiting the ¢ decision of the directors in London. J.C. Wagner, an old time prospec- tor of this vicinity, who has been laid up in the hospital with a complication ot diseases for some time, is able to be out again, R. T. Daniel is in Rossland on busi- ness today. : George McGaughey and Mies Lizzie Bullock were married at 2:30. o'clock this afternoon in the parlors of the Pacific hotel. Rev, H- Irwin, of Ross- land, officiated. It was a private affair, and only afew of the intimate friends of the ccntracting parties were present. He is one of the proprietors of the Pacific hotel, and his bride ia an attractive and popular young lady. They will make their home in Trail. The steamer Trail is tied up here today undergoing a few repairs. W. Oliver and E. W. Ward, of the Rossland, were in town today. Abe N. Johnson, the genial man- ager of the Hotel Arlington, has a claim of which he expects great things; he calls it the Hattie 8., and it is situated on the divide about three miles northwest of Trail. ‘It has a large ledge and showing up good specimens of gold-copper ore, and the. development work shows steady. im- provement. The adjoining property, the Columbia, owned by Mike Sheek, has just been cold for $5,000, —o— = THE ETHEL GROUP. A Contract Let To Do $3,500 Worth of Work. The Ethel group, consisting of six claims, five of which are the Ethel, Ada L., Tenderfoot, Blue Bell, Iron King are situated on the head waters of Murhpy creek and is owned by the Ethel Gold Mining y with E. south of the Hexahedron and four miles north of the railroad, is being worked by two nen, They have’ dis- covered a new vein, which was traced irom the Alpine, an, adjoining claim, which is also ti ing worked. The tunnel on the Mersey on the old ledges is in 40 feet. Work at present is only being done on the new ledge. The ore is a nice looking quartz carrying iron. ,, : Mr. Bonn says there is fully six ‘feet of snow in that section and that the crust is in the early morning strong enough to bear up a man. Trails are. however, shoveled out to most of the properties that are working. —— AN EXCITING RUNAWAY. A Horse Dashes Down Columbia Avenue and Injures Harry Harris, A few moments of intense excite- ment was occasioned this morning on Columbia avenue east by a’ runaway horse. The horse was tied to a sleigh seat in front of Thos. Wilson &° com- pany’s general merchandise establish- ment, while a load. was being packed on his back. He became frightened and ran away with the sleigh seat at- tached to its bridle. Its course was along Columbia avenue, past the custom house. When rounding the bluff, the seat, which ‘was bounding from side to side,“struck Harry Har- Tig, alittle boy about eight years of age, on the head,:inflicting a painful wound... He was standing in front of the Le’Roi livery stables. The horse, a short distance beyond, ended its wild dash by tumbling into the ditch. —~——. NEW THEATRE OPENING.
