AS I SEE IT WITH HARRY PEPPER With Minor Hockey and the Junior Warriors finished for the season and the lull between seasons approaching, the felĀ· lows who control the R.C.A .A. are providing us with some interesting items of news. George Dyson, a gent who is never lost for an idea , has come up with another first in this area . Saturday and Sunday the men who operate the Arena will sponsor a mixed bonspiel in which there will be no handpicked teams, everyone entering the two-day, three-game guaranteed event , will go into the hat and teams will be drawn . Entry feel will be a dollar a head, plus 10~ for every lost end , so it will mean that should anyone be so unlucky as to lose every end in the three games it will cost no more than four bucks each, in most .cases about $2.50 each or $10 a rink will be the total cost. A social evening and prizes will also have a place in this wing-ding , which should provide all who enter a chance to have some fun and games . It is hoped by the sponsors to have 16 rinks and the deadline for entries will be midnight , tonight, so everyone who learns about this event by reading these lines should get right on the phone to George and get your name entered. The proposed skate-athon will take place the following weekend, and pledge cards are now being circulated around town by people interested in entering. All in all , it will be a great stride in the right direction, and I hope it will have the desired effect which the sponsors look for . At least it will show the members of city government that the R.C.A.A. is not sitting on their thumbs waiting for some kind of a windfall to save their Arena. Another sport which should be swinging into stride in another month or so, minor soccer, was the subject of a meeting in Trail last week . Owing to the fact that we in Rossland are going to be awfully shorthanded for executive personnel this season, unless something ent and suggested that some of his executive take his place in the prexy ' s seat next year . Jim felt that there were lots of good looking prospects for the president 's chair but the only thing is to get someone to accept. This question will be solved at the annual meeting to be held in the week of April 10 to 14 and nominees will be produced by a nominating com mittee composed of Lloyd McLellan, Bill Profili and Bert Molnar . The president ' s remarks were followed by the presentation of awards in all divisions, starting with the Peewee Pup section of the Association in which there were two awards . The Most Improved Player Award went to Gary Rivett and the Most Valuable to Peter Corrado. In the Peewee division there were three trophies. The Most Improved went to Bruce McKay and in the House League the Most Valuable was Richie Samuelson who also won the scoring title . The Pee Wee Reps had their own Most Valuable Player , diminutive goalie Danny McFarland . The Most Improved Bantam Trophy , donated by theA .O.T .S was won by Terry Grose and the Most Valuable Bantam Trophy , the long lost Drake Dairy award was won by another goalie . The trophy was presented by Mrs . Jack Drake , who also was one of the main cogs in the machine which produced the fine supper , and it went to Ronnie Cox , a popular win . Rossland has long been blessed with fine young goalies and not the least candidate for hockey fame was the winner of the Most Valuable Midget Trophy, donated by the Rotary and presented by Rotarian Jack Fisher. It was won by part-time Junior Warrior goalie , Jackie Wert . unforseen happens , we did not send a delegate . This fact was noted in the copies of minutes sent along to me by incoming president Cy Lambert ofRossland and secretary-treasurer Don Finnestad of Trail. Headed " Soccer News " and expected to be a regular item in the coming season , the brief says, "All but one area was represented at the annual meeting of the west Kootenay Arna teur Soccer Ass 'n held in Trail , March 8th, Rossland being absent. Although playing fields are still covered with snow , plans were made for another active season. With some 400 boys involved, many important things need to be done . The 1972 executive is C. F. Lambert, Pres ., Andy Grant Vice-Pres ., Don Finnestad Secy-Treas . Area representatives from Castlegar, Genelle , Montrose , Fruitvale, Samo, Nelson and Trail were asked to have team entries in by April 3rd . Scheduling of the large number of teams is then the next big job . Scheduling will be in the hands of Bill Reed of Trail , Andy Grant of Genelle and Richard Eggars of Nelson . Let' s get off to a good start for another soccer s eason .'' A meeting will be called this coming week to formulate Ross land 's Minor Soccer plans . Last Friday , the Minor Hockey players held their big night , in the form of the first Annual Minor Hockey Banquet. It was attended by some 200 Minor Hockey kids representing some four divisions plus their coaches and some guests . After a fine meal put on by the ladies of the Oddfellows order, president Jim Markle called the gathering to order with a couple of blasts on his referee' s whistle . He told the boys that he had enjoyed his tenure as president of Minor Hockey and voiced the opinion that he felt two years was enough in the office of presid - 2.. After these presentations were completed a draw was made to dispose of four old sets of goalie equipment and the lucky (?) winners were Doug Phillips , Campbell Atkinson, Danny Wood and Robbie Martin. With the festivities over , an impromptu meeting was held and one of the highlights was the request by Warrior manager Lido Bertoia, that the Junior " B" squad come under the banner of the Minor Hockey organization during the coming year . This question will be given full coverage at the coming annual meeting . One of the things which I like about kids , especially the wee ones , happened on Friday night when Jim Markle called on two ladies to receive corsages . Mrs. Greta Cox and Mrs . Vi Krest were given a thunderous ovation as they had their corsages pinned on them by their sons Ronnie and Donnie . The tourists who are heading for Alaska were spearheaded by an advance guard to Seattle this morning, the balance of the team are leaving tonight. Good flying and good luck , fellas ! Meetings of the local Little League Baseball Association and Girls ' Softball are taking place this week . The Little League was held last night, and tonight the girls gather at the Skiers Den below the Allan Hotel at 7.30 p.m.
