C4 CASTLEGAR NEWS February 24,1982 Computer firm reaches out Hee EDMONTON (CP) Ontario firm wants to: offe: free room, board and co! ter time to young comput me fanatics, reckoning’ thay might produce fresh ideas for the company. Ed_Kellow, president of Commodore Business Machines Ltd. of Toronto, says an apartment building stocked with terminals and computer whiz-kids could produce valuable sidelines, “Out of that bunch some- where there would be two or three that would be very valuable for the computer industry and to Commodore,” he said. “Commodore would fund them totally for food and rent.” Kellow said he expects the main contributions would be in software — computer programs that Commodore ‘could market. “If any of them write a program Commodore could use, then we'd pay them a royalty.” Goals ‘anf tHe sald one high school ropout earned $600,000 from the company, over two, years from royalties on \a ‘word-processing program. ° Kellow said the program would be open to anyone interested in and able to handle computers, and resi- dents of the computer build- ing would be free to work on ° anything they chose. “The idea is not to restrict it to students,” he sald. “All the best brains are not in universities.” He said no location has been chosen, but Alberts is a prime choice. Kellow said he has discus-- sed informally the idea of a partnership with the provin- cial government. - “We'll be preparing a formal proposal very short- ly.” He also said he hopes the government would select the candidates with up to 10 per cent. coming from outside Canada. .Many successful Those who dispair over trying to quit smoking or lose weight can take heart from a study published in the Can- adian Journal of Public Health. The study by psychologist Stanley Schachter. of New York’s Columbia University, suggests that the majority of - those unhappy. about their smoking or. their weight ul- timately succeed in dealing with the problem. Usually they are successful without the direct help of therapists or doctors. Schachter interviewed 83 members of tie psychology department at his university and 78 people working in shops in a small town on Long Island, . Of the 161 individuals, 34 ‘were current smokers and 60 were former smokers, who, on average, hadn't had a puff for more than seven years. Among those who had tried to quit, Schachter's data indicated 77 per cent _ultimately succeeded. Among the same 161 in- dividuals, 46 had had persis- tent weight problems, de- fined as 15 per cent.or more overweight. Forty of these people had tried to lose weight and 25 had ultimately succeeded. Schachter says pessimism over controlling weight or smoking rests largely on‘ the - outcome of one attempt. Only 10 per cent might succeed at stopping smoking or losing weight on the first serious attempt, Schachter says,- but as.-people. keep trying the total number of successes climbs slowly. Conflict of interest WASHINGTON .(REUT- ER) — The increasing com- mercialization of genetic- engineering techniques is causing a crisis in U.S. universities and in the sci- entific ‘community, several researchers say. During a symposium at an American Association for the Advancement of Science meeting, the scientists said faculty members are facing a serious conflict of interest between their responsibili- ties to students and colleges and to their commercial in- terests. They said the commercial- ization of genetic engineering also is blocking the tradi- tional free flow of informa- tion among scientists. Jonathan King of the Mas- sachusetts Institute of Tech- nology, a long-time opponent of recombinant DNA re- search, said he believes the situation is unique. When the electronics rev- olution began, researchers left universities to start their own ventures, he said. Now scientists are starting com- panies but also remaining on _ university faculties. King said this resulted in: — Public funds being used" for research after which the scientists withhold results _ for proprietary reasons. — Research attention be- ing pointed toward work that might lead to commercial gain. There is research into developing human insulin, a cure for diabetes, he said, but . little into finding the cause of the disease because there is more profit in the cure. — Scientists, making pri- vate gain from federally funded research causing “the public to buy back what i ithas paid for.” King suggested the gov- ernment withhold funding for for any scientist who had an equity position in the re- search. Gilbert Omenn “of ‘the Brookings Institution said there is some tradition in science of withholding .infor- mation for private glory such. as first-publication or to win awards. “The oldest. trick in the book is'to withhold a step in the’ process in communi. cations with other scient- ists,” he said. But King said that this now is being institutionalized, and. that it affects review com- mittees’ allocation of funds as well as the contents of sci- entific journals. .
