But with 1981 census figures showing that 1.6 million Canadians live alone, that “couples mentality” must change. And singles must come to terms with the rewards and risks of living on their own, adds the author of Success- fully Single — How to Live Alone and Like It (Key Porter Books, $14.95). “Oh, I know that the person who suddenly finds himself alone because of death or divorce is going to be on a downer at the begin- ning,” Wylie, single since her husband died 13 years ago, said in an interview. “But they they bogia to discover that si can covery.” She recalled a conversation with a woman, recently wid- owed, who said she found it ironic that she had to lose her husband before she found herself. MEN FARE WORSE “Actually, women seem to fare better than men when death or divorce occurs,” Wylie said. “Women have a social network, a support system. Men don't seek sup- port for their emotions and often drown their troubles in alcohol or tend to marry again in a hurry.” On the other hand, women usually take a financial beat- ing — their income goes down about 40 per cent, added Wylie, who has also written a self-help book for widows, a retirement guide and a money manual for women. She said one of “the real dangers” in being single is the ibility of be a time of enormous dis- selfish and set in your ways. The magic of your efficiency and the effectiveness of your planning make you think you know better than anyone. “You not only become set in your ways, you also become selfish, too customed to indulging only yourself and your desires. So part of your coping has to involve staying open. “If you're going to keep on making and having friends, learning and growing with them and not away from them, you cannot pull your. self into your tidy little shell and isolate yourself.” NEED OWN TIME On the other hand, she said, everyone should take some time each day for themselves. “For some it's a walk in the morning. Baths and showers, jogging, swimming, biking, tennis, all those good things are better, more effective methods of releasing tension than alcohol or tranquilli- zers.” Wylie said that giving yourself little treats is es- sential for singles. “Pamper yourself — be- cause no one else is around to do it for you. Pamper your ears with music, your feet with a pedicure or your body with a massage.” Another essential for singles is planning ahead. “I don't know a single who doesn't find weekends dif- fieult without a plan. Long weekends are even worse.” So it's wise to plan an excursion out of town, a pienic, an outing with a friend. “You have to plan, you have to phone, you have to make arrangements, and even then you can't always bring it off. DEBORAH SPUNGEN Mother of murdered girl helpi By GEORGE ESPER PHILADELPHIA (AP) — When her 20-year-old daughter was found stabbed to death in a Manhatten hotel room eight years ago, apparently by her lover, punk rock star Sid Vicious, Deborah Spungen thought the only way to end-her pain was to kill herself. Instead, she transformed her grief into the therapeutic drive to help other parents of murder victims. First, she started a Philadelphia chapter of Parents of Murdered Children to bring them together to share their tears. “I needed to be in the group to find out how people survived. We started in our house with five families,” she said. But a former Philadelphia district attorney attending one of the meetings told her: “It's not enough to sit in this room and talk with other parents just to share your pain. You've got to get out there and do something to make this system different.” Last January, she opened a victim advocacy office as an offshoot of Parents of Murdered Children, providing volun. teers to go into court with families to comfort them, keep them posted on proceedings and help them with over problems. BACK IN SCHOOL And this fall, at age 49, she is back in school, studying at Bryn Mawr College for master's degrees in social work and in social policy law, with plans to help share legislation and lobby for families of murder victims. Recently, said Spungen, her pain over Nancy's death was revived with the release of Sid Nancy. Sid Vicious, a guitarist with the punk group Sex Pistols, was charged with the Oct. 12, 1978, murder but died four months later of a heroin overdose. Spungen, who wrote a book about life with her daughter, And I Don't Want To Live This Life, published in 1983, has no plans to see the movie. “What's extremely upsetting is people are con gratulating me that I sold my book as a movie. It's not my movie. We voted as a family not to see the movie .. .” “I cannot even begin to describe how it hurts . . . Leave her alone and leave us alone. They're only doing it to sensationalize.” Lori Long, a spokesman for Samuel Goldwyn Co., the film's distributor, said the focus on the movie is the deep love between Sid and Nancy. Spungen opened the victim advocacy office with an initial city couneil grant of $10,000, a cubicle and telephone in the district attorney's office, a salaried program director and about 20 volunteers. Recently the project received an additional $9,400. The advocacy office has been involved in more than 150 cases, from going into court with families to helping them fill ‘out crime victims’ compensation forms. Spungen said her problems with Nancy began long before her death. She threw violent tantrums and mis- treated her parents, sister and brother. She once hit her mother with a hammer. She was sent to a mental institution at age 11. By 16, she was a drug addict. In her book, Spungen writes no one will ever know what happened the night Nancy died. But, she said, based on a letter she received from Vicious and the police disclosure Nancy had bought the knife, “it is my belief that she engineered her death.” High blood sugar may be problem BOSTON (Reuter) — Preg- nant women whose blood sugar levels now are re- garded as norma] may, in fact, have levels high enough to cause overly: large babies and birth defects, medical researchers in Italy report. (AP) — How to dispose of nuclear waste is one of the decade's most pressing scientific is sues, scientists told a gath ering of regional editorial writers last weekend. But the public is not well equipped to make decisions concerning nuclear waste, said Kai N. Lee, a member of the National Academy of Sci- ences Board on Radioactive Waste Management. “I think we are up against one of the hardest problems in journalism and one of the hardest problems in Amer ican government, and that is how to provide to a society that believes in the Jeffer- sonian ideal information enough to understand a high ly technological problem,” Lee said. ~ “The ignorance of the gen eral public is very impres- sive, it’s very large. And what the general public needs is enough information and understanding to exer- cise its judgment.” Lee spoke at a nuclear Drug testing at Hanford SPOKANE (AP) — The United States Department of Energy will initiate periodic urinalysis tests next year for employees at the Hanford nuclear reservation, which is. the target of a federal in- vestigation into drug use, of- ficials said. Spokesman Tom Bauman said he was notified that a nationwide department plan will be aimed at people occupying sensitive positions with the energy department and its contractors. Hanford produces pluton- jum at top-secret plants for use in nuclear weapons. Unidentified informants quoted in an affidavit in the federal investigation claim: drug use at Hanford has caused potentially fatal acci dents; Hanford security for- ces were involved in the drug abuse; employees hid their drugs in contaminated areas so they would not be found; Hanford employees would not talk about the drug use because they feared for their lives; and energy department officials ignored attempts by some workers to call atten tion to the drug problems Until a few months ago, the only drug screening at the federal reservation was in the form of questionnaires when employees are investi gated for security clearance, according to a newspaper re port. waste panel discussion that also featured Michael J. Lawrence, the United States Department of Energy's manager of the Hanford nu- clear reservation in south- eastern Washington; and David Berick, a nuclear is- sues lobbyist faggthe Union of Concerned Scientists. The nation’s schedule for selecting a nuclear burial site in the next five years is not at all realistic, Berick said, and the U.S. Department of Energy has reached the dan- gerous point of assuming that no region ever would be will- ing to accept a nuclear dump. WRONGHEADED The agency is using such a perception — that it will be hated no matter what it does as a convenient but wrongheaded excuse for dealing in an uncaring way with target site populations, Berick said. The dump search faces failure unless there are changes in the present pro- cess, he said. In entrent.
