There is nothing new about that fact, but the tremendous rate of change is strictly confined to our day. We've seen graphs of the rise in earth's population — long centuries when the line is almost horizontal, then a slow curve upward, ending in a sharp climb and projected to be almost vertical in a generation or two. The same graph could well depict the rapid changes in almost every facet of human activity, For thousands of years man was limited in his travels to the speed of a horse. After the development of the steam locomotive in the 19th cen tury, he finally could move at 100 miles an hour. In jsut six decades he had quadrupled that speed. In two more decades he had doubled it again to 800 mph. Then, in 10 years he Knowledge snowballs. One bit of knowledge may hold the key to several other discoveries, in almost unrelated fields. Each of these in turn opens the way to a dozen more, in a chain reaction! This rapid and rising rate of change has consequently a destruc- tive effect on man, physically and morally. Society toiday has devel- oped a ‘throw-away’ mentality. Look around and one notices mechanical gadgetry of every description, often thrown away, not because they are broken, but because they are out. moded. Buildings are torn down before they are old, to make way for new ones. What about marriage vows? How easily these are broken; one’s partner discarded for another; chil- dren put away into institutions! A world leader cried, “The world is drunk with the quest for change.” Lottery numbers following passage is. “The agencies of evil are combinging their forces and world; and the final moments will be rapid ones.” (Testimonies, Vol. 9, Page II by E.G. White) How assuring it is to know that in the midst of a sea of change, God Himself is like a Rock, never chang- ing. “I the Lord do not change.” (Malachai 3:6) His standards remain the same, His love never wavers, His hand of providence is stretched out still. No wonder the hymn writer was moved to say: “Change and decay in all around I see! O Thous who changest not, Abide with me!” Amen. The work includes encouraging the formation of co-ops, teaching people the skills needed to utilize their land properly, and encouraging women in the villages to become more active and organized.
