H.W. C.Jickson, the secretary, was directed to communicate with F. W. Peters, the freight agent, conce ning the matter. Complaint was also made that, in ticket- ing tourists to the coast, side trips to Kootenay points were allowed, but that the company favored Nel- son by sending passengers there without additional charge, while fare was exacted from Robson to Rossl FRIDAY, OCTOBER 6, 1899. Objection was made to the pas- senger service to the Boundary country, because of the long wait at Robson, but it was pointed out that the company had really not had time to do anything and that a new schedule would shortly be arranged. wercs ANDREE’S MISSION. The announcement that a mes- sage has been found, purporting to come from Dr. Andree, who two years ago or more left Spitzbergen in a balloon to find the North Pole, has again turned attention to the probability of ever reaching that ob- jective point of so many explorers. It will not do to accept implicitly the Stockholm story that a buoy, dropped from Andree’s balloon, has been found, although it was his pur- pose to drop such an evidence when he sailed over the magnetic pole. The buoy was found near King Charles Island, not far from Spitz- bergen, from which point Andree set out on his balloon journey. This fact casts a shadow of suspicion cn the story, although it is possible the buoy may have been dropped and floated southward. The first expedition to find the North Pole was sent out by England in 1553. Since then the ingenuity of man and the daring of explorers have been taxed to find means of reaching the most northern extrem- ity of the earth. and Americans have vied with each other in fitting out expeditions. In 1596 a Dutchman discovered Spitz- | 5% bergen. During the next century Franz Joseph land was discovered. One of the most unfortunate polar expeditions was that of Sir John Franklin, who was directed by the British government in 1845 to find a passage to the Polar sea, and for this purpose was given two ships and 168 men. The party never re- turned and for the next 30 years the civilized world kept up a continual search for them, or until Lieutenant | 3 Sciiwatka, of the United States, found the graves of this noble band somewhere north of Hudson’s Bay. The latest expedition to leave for the ultra-north is that ot Li For nearly 350] yeurs English, Danes, Norweyians | ¢% New bers admitted Messrs. W. J. Nelson, Charles Parker, Dave Thomas, W. K.
