About 1,100 years ago Norwegians were using home-made skis of birch wood. This was the early type of recreational ski. It was 2.5 metres long and featured strap made of pig- skin and nailed to the ski. The boot was usually held in place by a strap that went around the heel and had a buckle attached to it. In Norway cross-country skis were a common means of transportation. The longer length served to carry the heavy loads skiers often carried on their backs. Beech, another hardwood, is put in the second layer of the ski for ° added strength. Lignostone, which is compressed beech wood, is used on the edges of the ski. This combination. of hard and soft woods give the wooden ski its flexibility: and strength. The Splitkein is primar. ily a touring ski. In British Columbia cross-country skiing is well established and is, “just about doubling every year,” according toe instructor Con- rad Brattebo, “There's a tremendous number of peo- ple taking it up,” he says, Brattebo is one of about 12 instructors who will be offering free lessons every Sunday at Nancy Green Lake after Christmas. Lessons will introduce the basics of cross-cbuntry skiing, showing: beginners how to choose skis, the proper: methods of waxing, and -how- to install bindings. Brattebo also sells wood- en skis, made in Norway, which he distributes from his home in Castlegar. Most of Brattebo's skis go to his students, He started selling skis three years ago, because he didn't feel that proper skis were available for the terrain in this area. ‘Splitkein’ skis, meaning several kinds of woods, stand up well and are hard to break being constructed of layers of hard and soft woods. “People shouldn't be looking for 3 fancy ‘typeof ski,” Brattebo says. “They; should look for a durable ski.” The Splitkein ski is made from hickory, spruce, beech passed away from the 80 you won't get a chill.
