LocadlSPORTS Wounded Warriors whip relaxing Rebels | Jonathan Green SPORTS REPORTER It was a scene right out of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. Playing the part of Ebenezer Scrooge at home Saturday, the Castlegar Rebels were visited by the ghost of Christmas past in the form of the Rossland Warriors. The ghost showed the home team how they had played against weaker teams this season and there was still time to correct that. But the Rebels didn’t heed that warning and ended up paying a very big price. Abandoning goalie Vaughn Welychko, the Rebels whipped out the shovels and started digging themselves a hole they would never climb out of. Feeney put the Warriors up for good on the power play at 8:37, then set up Johnson at 6:40 for the two-goal lead. Rossland scored three more before Dyball stopped the slaughter temporarily with 51 seconds left to make it 8-4. The teams traded goals in the third period before ultimately trading blows in a bench- clearing brawl at the end of the game. Walker said it was an ugly finish to an ug- ly game. “It was a real bad scene,” he said. “Two late hits started basically a real mess. It was bru- tal.” Walker said future free-for-alls could be prevented if the KIJHL would look into some rule changes. He said stopping teams from crowding the goalie at game’s end is something they should seriously consider. “I think the league should introduce a rule that stops players from leaving the bench af- ter the game,” he said. “You congratulate the goalie in the dressing room. “T think the league should do that as soon as possible.” The loss came one night after the Rebels had bounced the Beaver Valley Nite Hawks 10-4, extending their winning streak to three. Mark Graff led the way for Castlegar, scor- ing twice and adding three assists while Flodell notched a hat trick and an assist. Next action for the Rebels is Jan. 2 when the Spokane Braves pay a visit to the Com- plex. Game time is 8 p.m. @ Wednesday, December 23, 1992 It’s been an interesting year for yours truly, both from a personal and professional point of view. Professionally, life is good. Never has a job been so worthwhile coming to day in and day out. How many of us get to do what we grew up wanting to do? How many of us roll out of bed in the morning look- ing forward to another day at work? Never before have I been able to an- swer ‘I do’ to the previous questions. Personally, it was a year of meeting people who made my job even easier and, at times, even more difficult. You’re the ones who would call up or stop me on the street to say things like ‘You never heard this from me’ or ‘You might want to look into this.’ You’re also the ones who would phone up or stop me on the street to say things that were less than compli- mentary about stuff that I wrote. But that’s OK, because at least I know you read it and that’s what they pay me for. In all, I'd just like to say thanks to all the people who were a part of my 1992, directly or indirectly. He is supported by Buzz McDonald at third, Wilf Leduc at second and Mike Kurnoff at lead. Ray Heagy’s rink was next in line with six wins, one tie and only three losses. He was backed up Al Laranko, Ben ThorLarsen and Mike Zoobkoff. Winning is important for some people more than others. In the Pensioners league, we use the point system, which is designed to stop people from stacking their rinks. In the interests of fair play and sportsman- ship and in an atmosphere filled with com- passion, rinks are encouraged to take their points — even though they may be reluctant to do so.
