In a seven-day period, we have the spectacle of Jesus Christ given a hero's welcome into Jerusalem, then reduced to the status of a common criminal. I won't be so presumpt- uous as to suggest that this is how he viewed the last seven days of his life. However, every time I watch thi Easter drama unfold, that's certainly my feeling. First, we have the triump- hal entry into Jerusalem. Jesus, the popular under- ground religious leader, emerges from hiding and enters the city to the good will and adulation of the people. But in the twinkling of a mood change, the good will vanishes. The people again show how fickle are our moods. The hero is an outlaw and must be dealt with accordingly. That's exactly what happens and normally this would be the end of the story. Not yet; within this same week, the normal, expected flow of events starts to fall apart. Even though this renegade is duly Processed & Pew leaves that hill feeling right. There is a gnawing sense of discomfort. It's greater than doubt; it's more of the order of guilt, If there is anything that this drama is NOT about, it is guilt. This drama is about forgiveness and salvation. It is-about the supreme April Fool's joke — and it is neither Jesus who is the fool nor are we the fool. Jesus may look like a fool. He's endured the roller-coast- er ride from king to clown; from prince to jester; from hero to criminal. He con- tinues to endure all the in- sults that we, in dur sinful state, continue to heap upon him. And for each of us he endured and continues to en- dure this ride; not for his glory — there is nothing glamorous or glorious about humiliation. His sole purpose for coming into our lives is to glorify God and to extend God's offer.of salvation, even it it means debasing and humiliating himself. The drama that reaches its peak during these next seven days has Jesus Christ en- dured mind-boggling changes in status. Don't be fooled by. them. The message remains and is crucified al two other common criminals, no- body feels especially satis- fied. No ne feels that justice has been done or has been seen to be done. No one h and Jesus endured all this for us and for God's glory. He asks only that we respond to this offer. How will you answer his call? Local doctor gets certified Dr. Jon Van Vliet, of Castlegar has passed the certification examination of the American Medical Soc- iety on Alcoholism and Other Drug Dependencies (AMSAODD) and is recog- nized by the society as know. ledgeable and expert in chemical: dependence. A total of 539 physicians from throughout the U.S. and Canada were certified this year by AMSAODD, the major national and _ inter. national organization for physicians who treat alco- holism and other drug de- pendence. Certificates will be pre- sented during the society's 19th annual medical-scientific conference in Washington, D.C. in April. “We are seeing a vastly in- creased awareness of alco- holism and other drug de- pendencies as major national medical problems,” society president Dr. Margaret Bean-Bayog, said in a pre- pared release. COMMUNITY NEWS Some Of Our Members Prefer To Do HAPPY RECIPIENT Sateway’s Linda Swanson is presented with the Rotary Annual Service award for her unfailing, good-natured manner while at work Rotary president Hugo Smecher Presented the award. ROTARY AWARD... Dr. Waldo Yule (left) is presented with the Paul Harris award at the Rotary dinner this month, Making the presentation is Ron Ross (centre) and Jim Lamont. CosNews photo by Jock Charters Awards given at Rotary meet By JOHN CHARTERS Tuesday night was both ladies’ night and awards night at the Castlegar Rotary club meeting at the Sandman Inn. The first award winner was Linda Swanson of Castle- gar Safeway, who was pre- sented with the Rotary An- naul Service award. In mak- ing the presentation presi- dent Hugo Smecher said: “It doesn’t matter whether you come to Linda at the begin- ning of her shift or at the end, she is unfailingly pleasant and helpful and an asset to the company and to the community. The award took the form of two plaques. One, with the name of the winner and the date, is designed to be dis- played in the winner's place of business for one after which it is again put up for competition. The other goes to the award winner. Last year's winner of the service award was Scottie Tait of Scotties Marina. The second awards were Paul Harris Awards named in honor of Rotary founder Paul Harris: In making the presentations to Dr. Waldo Yule and Ron Ross, Rotarian Jim Lamont explained that Paul Harris awards are given to Rotarians making a don- ation of at least $1,000 to the foundation or by a Rotary club making a similar dona- tion in the name of. an in- dividual — Rotarian or non- Rotarian — which it wishes to honor for outstanding service. Other winners of the award in the Castlegar club include Lamont himself, Paul Oglow and the late Frank McLeod. Rotary International uses the’ funds to establish post- graduate scholarships of about $15,000 for studies overseas. Castlegar has two such post-graduate students — Joanne Pepper, who stud- ied in Oxford University in England, and Tanya Rogers who is presently studying in New Zealand. Selection for such scholarships in rigorous and the competition keen. The program. for the even-' ing was presented by Lou- Ann McCurdy of Trail, an advanced student in Toast- masters International. She explained the purpose of toastmastering and the tech- niques used in public speak- ing. Her husband, Rob, ac- companied her as her ev: uator, the eritique of every speech being an essential part of the training.
