Nine hundred delegates representing-more than 300 churches will be at the University of B.C. for the 18-day conference in late July and early August, says United Church Rev. Rod Booth, chairman of the council's media committee in Vancouver. Joining the delegates will be observers from every — i hristian the Roman ~ Catholic Church, which is not a member of the council. “It will be a fair slice of the world’s Christians,” says Booth. “It will be a fair slice of the world. It will be an accounting, where we will look back and take stock. It will be a meeting of a family.” The assembly, whose theme will be Jesus Christ: The Life of the World, will focus on issues both social and theological. It will be the first time the council has held such a gathering in Canada, and the first assembly in North America since 1954. GETS MORE MEMBEBS. The WCC's membership, which has more than doubled since the council's first was held in A years ago, embraces . both Orthodox and Protestank denominations, * Booth, noting the council is becoming more a global organization than an enclave of the Western world, says one of the main subjects of discussion will be the tion of of gays and abortion. Those problems are the: least of the: worries in the Third World.” Many of these issues. will lead toward polley statements. by the Switzerland-based couneil, ‘urging member churches: to take specific action. 3 Those who will be speaking at the assembly include the ° “Rev. Robert Runcie, Archbishop of Canterbury; |, Jean: Vanier, son of former governor general Georges Vanier; Coretta King, widow of Martin Luther King; evangelist Billy - Graham; and Allan Boesak, moderator of the World Alliance ,of Reformed Churches. But Booth saya the meeting’s organizers have. not intended to turn the list of speakers into an ecclesiatical who's who. ‘Additionally, there's been an: effort made -to ensure that church officials won't monopolize the micro-" phones: 48 per cent of the delegates are not ordained. “They don't want headliners,” he said. “They want. people who are actually involved in the struggle.” Involvement in the so-called struggle has meant the council, throughout its history, has often. generated controversy. Most recently, the CBS television program, 60 Minutes, asked whether the organization was donating money toarm revolutionaries. The council denies its grants buy weapons or that it endorses violence, but. muintains that words alone won't ~ combat injustice. That conviction is backed with. programs _to deal with poverty, rural development and social justice. The, council's program to combat racism has issued grants to. various groups, including $85,000 in 1978 to the Patriotic Front in Zimbabwe, whose ® guerrillas have been battling whit for six years, Rev. Philip Potter, the council's, general secretary, says eee is noreason to believe those'grants have been used for ‘Booth said the problem with the anti-racism program is that receiving groups are’trusted to channel money to whether the West is willing to share its knowledge with Third World countries.’ The women’s movement, ecology, the search for unity and ways to fight racism will also be considered by the council, which attempts to assemble once a decade. “I suspect the assembly will also call for something on disarmament,” Booth says. “The churches of the South Pacific want to make it clear they don’t want to be a nuclear garbage pail. . “I don’t think it will get very exorcised about some of the things we worry ‘about in this country, like the ordaining including schools, food, health services and aid to refugees..To avoid paternalism,: the council decided it could not administer the funds. The move to offer a grant to the Patriotic Front has generated more than words of criticism. In. August, 1981, the Salvation, Army, because it disagreed with the award of the grant and because it held an ideology on eucharistic worship contrary to- that of the council, withdrew its membership. Booth said that although the Salvation Army will be das this summer’ he is unsure of what the organization's role will be. 5 j Chemofg’s Photogtaphic Gewices * NEW AND EXCITING ideas inthe art of photographic imagery.
