Early Detection of Cancer of Stomach Now Possible Through New Method A new method. for the early detection of.cancer of the sto- mach is being used at the pro- vincial cytological diagnostic laboratory situated in the Bri- ish Colpmbia Cancer Institute in Vancouver. Chief -technician at the cytological diagnostic lab is Denys Lock who, last year spent séveral weeks in the Papanico- laou laboratory at Cornell Uni- versity, New York, learning this technique and studying-other ex- -tensions through a grant from the British Columbia Division of the Canadian Cancer Society. In every case of cancer there is a stage when it is still curable but, since cancer is very slow to manifest itself, the difficulty lies in detecting ‘the growth in this early stage. Pain, which would _ normally drive a person to his doctor, is seldom present until eancer is to far advanced for a cure to be effected. In the case of stomach cancer,! major sur- gery has been necessary in the past before diagnosis could be made. This new method employs the same. principle as the Papanico- laou smear test which has. been used for some time for the de- tection of uterine and cervical cancers. In the case of stomach cancer the device which 1s used consists of a double rubber tube (two tubes in one). At the end is an opening which allows fluids to pass in either direct- lion, , There is also, at the end, a small balloon of thin rubber which is covered with a slightly rough silk net. The balloon can be inflated or deflated by the technician. carrying out the test and, deflated, it’ is inserted through the patient’s mouth and throat, down into the stomach. When it is in place in the sto- mach it is inflated and deflated several times, the object being, by gentle abrasion, to remove infinitismally small particles of SASKATCHEWAN ELECT-- ION JUNE 11th - REGINA Premier T. A minimal amount of alkaline or salty solution is injected into the stomach through the open end of the_tube and when this is withdrawn, by usction, it brings with it the cells which have been loosened: during the abrasion. At the conclusion of the test the balloon is gently withdrawn and the soft silk net is washed off, Any cells found either in the washing or in the withdrawn fluid from the: stomach are ex- amined under a microscope and it is’ possible to detect in the eat majority of cases whether any of the cells are cancerous.
