The loss to Castlegar eliminated Beaver Valley from any chance of making the play-offs. The main reason for the win, Sauer says is the control shown by his team “The team showed discipline throughout the game, and we came away with the win,”Sauer said. The Rebels have two games on the road this weekend, Friday night they play Beaver Valley and Saturday they face-off against Nelson in the battle for third in the standings. sketball teams have a home / therr third loss of the season. Although the close game ended in a 44,39 loss, Senior girls coach Jack Closkey said it was a loss from nich to leam The girls were flat and we could not get things rolling in the game...there was a lack of concen- tration on the floor,” Closkey said. While the senior teams have been bashing the boards, the junior boys have been doing their share as well. They have won their last two games. On Monday they played Mt. Sentinel and came out with a 47-38 victory. Grant Mosby scored ten points. overall, leading his team to victory Last Thursday, the boys sailed away with a 57-25 win over J.L. Crowe. Mosby shot his way to 18 points for the Rockers Junior boys Coach Doug Hickey is using the games as a stepping stone towards the play-offs. His team has only two more regular season games. “Our next two games against Rossland and L.V. Rogers are only warm up games for the first round of the play-offs when we play Grand Forks,” Hickey said. The junior boys have played two previous games against Grand Forks this season and had lost.both. With those two losses behind them, Hickey says his team has devel- oped and has a good chance to take the game “If my boys show up to play then we have a legitimate chance of winning,” One reason for his confidence in the team, is that he feels they have all developed and matured since the start of the season. “Overall the players have shown the best development of any junior team I have coached,” Hickey said. im WEEKLY SPEC ‘ Homemade Sg Winter Hours 10 am - 8 pm ‘Castlegar's only drive thru’ AUTHENTIC RUSSIAN FOOD 1521 COLUMBIA AVE. 365-8388 Wednesday, February 3, 1993 The Castlegar Sun Page 11A Local pool players aiming for title /t was a// downhill, but not easy Sun Sports Castlegar mountain biker Matt Scott went up to Rossland for the Winter Carnival Mountain Bike race and came home with a third place finish In a field of 22 riders, the slalom race had the riders wind their way down the run along the ¥-Bar-at the Red Mountain Ski Resort. Putting themselves behind the cue ball would be a more accurate description though. ‘The three are off to Prince George to participate in an eight-ball tournament as part of the Mardi Gras celebrations. Darlene Funnell, who has only been . playing pool for two and a half years, likes the people and the competition at the toummaments, “It's the challenge of it... I love the competition and above all I love the peo- ple,” Funnell said. With a $7,000 prize bank up for grabs, Funnell expects the competition to be top grade. She is also expecting a large number of competitors, since the entry fee is $75. Lynn Peterson has been playing for 22 years and Ken Knourek has been playing for 20. Banking on having the experience behind them, they ‘will be lining up the balls to take their shot at coming home with a share of the prize monty. Although the competition is expected to be fierce, Funnell is optimistically looking forward to the weekend. “We are all hoping to come back from the weekend with something,” Funnell said. Of the three, Funnel] puts Knourek’s chances quite high to win the tournament. The third game of the tourney had the Reps meeting up with Vernon and they soon jumped ahead to a quick 4-1 lead in the first period. Off to another strong start the Reps cruised along and took the game 7-4. Tyler Damell lead the way with three goals and one helper. Winning game three earned Castlegar a spot in the play- offs. Castlegar once again was up against Winfield. Castlegar won the game 4-2 and advanced to the Championship game. A strong defensive game allowed Winfield only nine shots on goal A re-match with Lumby gave the Rep’s a chance to avenge the earlier loss. Hard work earned Castlegar a 4-2 victory and rights to boast, they were the Champions.
