And the magician dressed in white tie and tails with a rinky-dink tripod ta- ble, top hat and wand, be- longs to a bygone age. , Perhaps that's why Doug Henning, the Winnipeg-born magician, has been having a hard time with the critics selling his New York show, Merlin, even with all its glit- ter, glamor and charm, The show, first.epened™ to poor reviews and. W when the city was crippled by a blizzard, and most of the critics simply stayed away. But if word of mouth gets. around that this is more than just another magic show, it could be in for a long run. This is a magic show’ with some substantial differences: a story line about the ap- prentice sorcerer:': who became young King Arthur's mentor, and music — as un- memorable as it is — trying torecreate the magic days of Camelot. The site of Henning’s trie- kery is auspicious. Henning, billed as both the star of Merlin and the creator of the show's ‘illu- sions, drawa‘on all its stage machinery, Trap-door tricks col abound, as do flashes of fire and cartridges ‘of smoke. Henning even tops the saw-a-woman-in-half trick. He does it twice; and mixes the torsos and legs. They are hoisted off the floor and disappear in a clatter, but: immediately reappear comfortably settled-on the other side of the stage. Can it possibly be the same horse? Henning doesn't really sing nor dance, but flashes his toothy smile and carriés his . lines well.\In a: trick, at the final curtain, he is trans- formed into George Lee Andres, playing Merlin as an old man, A good pit orchestra labors mightily with the musje by Elmer Bernstein, best known for ‘motion’ picture’ scores, Sadly lacking, however, is one good hummable: tune, something someone can take away from the theatre on his lips.
